Hello Forum, 2008 F350 Superduty 5.4L 4x4.....Just put an hour of searching into this as there are many spark plug threads only to be more confused. I am looking to change the spark plugs and boots. Want OEM spark plugs to keep motor happy.
I see there are a few Motorcraft spark plugs that are matched when I search the big box auto parts store websites.
For example one says: OE Finewire Single Platinum Part #: F10001324786MTR for $15.49 each
and the other says: Motorcraft Spark Plug (PZK14F) Part #: SP546 for $12.99 each.
What does my 5.4L want to see? Any prefrence on aftermarket boots? I see one boxstore wants $5 and change for each boot and spring.
Also being that I have a 2008 am I gonna run into the 2 part plug breaking problems?
Thanks in advance
I'm not as concerned with price as I am with the exact plug that I need. When I cross refrence with ford parts I get those 2 different pulgs. I have an early 2008 (5-2007) on the door jam sticker. My spark plug boots are black if that matters. I don't know the history on the truck but I am assuming they are the original plugs as most of my repairs on this are the first.
Forgive me for chiming in about something I'm not overly familiar with but it seems the Motorcraft SP546 replaces the SP515 so I'd go with that part number.
I'm not clear on the brown vs black boots---Motorcraft shows a black boot used for your engine.

Did you look on the emissions sticker under the hood to see if the correct spark plug number is listed on it?
There is no information on spark plugs under my hood. I looked hard too.
Called Ford Parts department and they said that the SP546 was the upgrade from the 515's that break sometimes when removing.
I asked about upgrading the boots to brown and he said there is no difference in the boots other than color and brown just let you know the new plugs were installed.
I am seeing that people are saying the brown is 1/2" longer. Holy confusing headache.
So if you upgrade the plug, the black one will work but is the brown the better one to use?
I can't speak about the 3V motors but unless there is a physical difference in boots, something that would affect its function I'd use any good quality brand and not give it a lot of thought.
So to clarify for future readers. The SP 546 Plug is the upgrade to the 515. However they are not the plugs that you hear about that have the threads all the way down. The 546 looks almost exactly like the 515. I removed all 8 of mine while the engine was hot with no problems at all. I cleaned and dialectic greased the spring ends and kept the black boots. If anyone comes across this thread with 1st hand knowledge of differences in the boot lengths between black and brown and the different plugs please chime in.
