So i dropped a carbed 351w into my van(swapped from efi 300) Got a 3 wires gm style w internal coil. Its been running fine for weeks got about 500 miles on the block as of now.
Was driving yesterday and it just completely died. No spark. After diagnosing no spark because the rotor wasnt spinning i said ****. Pulled the distributor to find that it sheared the gear off which was still attached. Got some needle nose and pulled the other half out Of the oil pump shaft. The gear itself was fine (luckily) i pictured in my head the worst of pulling either a warn gear out or pieces of it. So what causes this? ****ty summit 60$ distributor just failed
so needless to say im in the market for a new aftermarket ignition system for the 351w
mallory unilite maybe? Mechanical or vacuum?
and a remote coil.
was it because i didnt use a bronze gear on it?
just if im gonna spend the money i want it to not snap in two pieces
how does this happen
high volume oil pump?
Steel gear when it should have been bronze?!
Did this break at where the roll pin was inserted through the shaft? It's possible that could be caused by too much load from the oil pump, or something jammed up the pump. I would open it up to check.
It's hard to tell from the resolution of your image, especially down into the gear.
BTW, what brand distrbutor was that?
(My personal gripe here: It's amazing how some cameras can generate so many pixels in an image, yet still provide poor resolution.)
yeah i took a screenshot from a video its not the greatest. I dont have any others either.
i have heavy duty oil in her for brakein. Idk if its a high volume pump?
i got a basic longblock from marshals machine up in maine.
procomp electronic hei 6000 dist from summit
Ive driven about 500 so i think ill do an oil change and see whats lurking in the oil pan.
the gear on the dist isnt chewed or anything. The shaft that was still in the block pulled out smooth.
just would hate to buy a good ignition system to snap another
So the gear didn't just sheer off, but the whole shaft sheered in half? I suppose you get what you pay for when you spend $60. I guess I would pull the pan to see if something contributed to the failure aside from cheap parts.

there was no damage done to the gear and the way it broke the gear was still seated so it continued to do its job just couldnt rotate the dist because well they werent one shaft anymore hahah
I put a steel gear in and i think that has to do with why it sheared originally, instead of the called for cast iron. I swapped dizzy to another one with a cast gear and she fired right up and drove her 15 miles no issues. So its either the gear or the fact that the oil pump is putting stress on the shaft because the break in oil Is to much for a 60$ china distributor
What year is the 351w? If it's a roller cam motor you need a steel gear..... maybe you got a defective dizzy from Summit? Stay away from the Mallory Unilite, I fried two electronic pick-up modules in three years....they are prone to fail from voltage spikes, specialty if ya running lots of electrical stuff. Last year I ended swapping to a Ford DSII stock ignition components and so far no problems.
