I have an 83' F250 351w that came out of California. I've been having problems and a mechanic friend from FTE got down to the conclusion that I need to swap out the existing distributor (which was garbage) to an 83' distributor and swap the brown grommet ignition module with the blue grommet module. I went to replace and found that the new distributor, with the vacuum advance (the old was controlled by ECM) had a larger gear than the old. So I went to get a pin punch to swap gears and found out that the original also had a longer shaft that drives the oil pump. Do I need to swap the old longer shaft with the new one or does anyone know if a normal (not high altitude or California) 83' distributor shaft is long enough to engage the oil pump? I'm far from a mechanic so I'm having a hard time with this.
Anyways- 1983 F250 351w 5.8L, originally brown grommet module with a distributor that uses CPS. California truck. Previous owner cut about every emissions wire that led to the control box under the seat anyways.
You mean the new one? Because I have three, one I pulled from a 78' Turino with a 351W and the new one and both are identical. Then there's the third that came with the truck that is controlled by ECM. The problem is I guess I was wondering if there is a large difference in the components in the block Between a 351W from California and a 351W from Washington. Because the gear on the originally installed distributor controlled by ECM is quite a bit smaller. I bought the new one at Shuck's and I specified several times I wanted the 351W distributor. A member of FTE came over and said it was the right one but I needed to swap gears with the original. It's all a little confusing. Maybe I should have cut my teeth on an inline-6??? lol
Sorry for the double post... too late to edit. I compared the 77' drive gear to the original Duraspark III distributor and they have the same size gear. Just different size shafts. I think you may be right in that I was sold a 302 dizzy and the girl didn't know what she was doing. It looks the same in every way but the gears are different sizes, right?
Did a little research and I think this is the distributor you need: http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,.../selectZip.htm . What I'd do is take the original '83 EEC distributor to Autozone and compare its shaft, housing and gear with the Autozone distributor for the '81 351 Windsor motor.
