So I have a 6.0 Excursion with an Asheville long block in it with about 30k miles. Coming back from a trip last night I was smelling coolant so stopped and looked, and found a slight drip coming from what looked like the center of the engine, water pump area. Haven’t had time to really dig into it but I”m doubting that the water pump has failed in 30k miles.
Question is, what else is up front that will drip coolant? I haven’t done much work on these engines yet so I’m not familiar with what else is up there.
There’s a number of things up front there. Radiator and heater hoses, the front cover it’s self. The is a metal tube on the passenger side the goes into the top of the front cover that’s worth a look. And the water pump may be ok but still leak at it’s gasket. Just have to dry everything, let it run until it leaks and follow it back upstream.
I wouldn't just doubt the water pump. I put a new one on when I did my heads and the seal cracked and started leaking maybe around 10k miles.
Pressurize the system and use a bright light and mirror to look under the bottom side of the pulley.

Yes,I plan to check that as well. Can't overlook anything.

You may know this but the water pump has a freeze plug that can also leak. Mine had 5200 miles on it and started weeping coolant around the plug but just enough to make that hot ELC smell but evaporate before it could drip.

Nope, didn't know that! I've never had to do anything but regular maintenance on this thing until now so I don't know much about them yet.
Welcome to the 6.0 world. You will do one of 3 things- #1 learn this motor and how to work on it - #2 spend a butt load of money on people that tell you what's wrong( Most haven't a clue) #3 Sell it.
Yeah that's where they usually leak when the seals go. The one below was only in service a few months or so with maybe 5k miles (can't remember exactly). But you can see how new it appears.

Yep, I’ll learn it. I was a mechanic for a long time, I work on everything. I just like to cheat and get some ideas before i tear into something new.
