While crawling under my front end yesterday, I noticed coolant dribbling down the front of the engine and landing on top of the lower radiator hose. I suspect a water pump seal is beginning to leak. It isn't dripping on the ground yet, but it seemed I was topping off the coolant every week. I was planning to bring the truck to the stealership for a coolant and brake system flush, but now I am wondering if I should just do the coolant flush and water pump r/r myself. How difficult is a water pump r/r?

kinda of pricy repair at my stealership, just make sure its done right, without a doubt replace the t-stat and housing at same time as the pump and flush the coolant,it seems if you been addin it is diluted, get some fw-16 in it also!!
I had the same problem with my 2000 7.3., leaking on top of the hose.
The water pumps have rubber o-ring like gaskets that fit in a slot in the water pump. When I took my pump off the gasket was hard as rock.
You can buy just the gaskets, but I would replace the entire pump and thermostat, if you have high mileage. The hardest part to doing it, is taking off the fan. But with the right tools you can do the job in less than 2 hours.

Less than 90k on it. If it's only o-rings, no big deal. Or do you think I should go ahead and do the pump/stat?
Replace your t-stat with a 203 degree thermo and get a billet housing instead of the oem pot metal from Bob Riley at dieselsite if your going to change it all out.

What is the benefit of a 203 stat? The billet housing is a good idea.

I found the site and ordered both parts. I also ordered a new water pump, gasket, belt tensioner and serpentine belt. I'll keep my old tensioner for a spare.
The website for ordering a 203 degree thermo and the billet housing is www.dieselsitetoo.com. There is a good article that explains the reason for using it. Bob Riley is a good guy to deal with and will answer any questions you have. Several of the mods I have done to my Ex have come from him and they all work as advertised. Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, Jumbo_Ute, I tried PM'ing you, but I got e message saying I hadn't been a member long enough or posted enough. Anyway, hope you found the info you were looking for.

Yup, I bookmarked that one. I ended up finding it through another Excursion forum. Thanks again.
I had a similar problem on a 350 7.3 and all it turned out to be was corrosion on the neck of the housing where the hose was clamped. Removed the hose cleaned the neck re-installed hose no more leak.
