Coolant Leak

<TABLE width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>I have a 2005 Explorer that is leaking coolant from somewhere in the front. It only seems to be leaking when I park it in my garage and stops after the engine cools but not when I leave it outside. When I turn the vehicle off I can hear the coolant boiling from through the dash. I am thinking that it is time for a flush. If I had to guess, I would say that the reason it only leaks when parked in a heated garage is because the temps have been around anywhere from -40 to -60 up here in Alaska so when I leave it outside it cools down quick enough to where it doesn't boil out. Are these two issues related and is there anything else that could be causing it to leak?

Check the weep holes on the water pump for signs of coolant. Then carefully check the gasket around the water pump where it meets the block. Usually when there's a leak at teh pump you'll have some coolant on the bottom of the flywheel (I've replaced 3 water pumps on my '91 Exploder, 205k miles, still strong as the day i bought it new). Next check the radiator (put in two of those on same vehicle) for any indication of a leak - white streaks on the plastic suggest coolant leak that has evaporated. If all this seems ok put a new cap on the radiator. If you still have a coolant leak, it might be time for new hoses (you're about due anyway...). And if you do the hoses, do the tstat while you're in there. Be sure your water pump isn't the culprit - otherwise, you'll be draining the coolant again when you replace it.

To be fair, I run the heii out of my truck and used to pull a big boat with it, hence the cooling system issues......

I don't think it is the water pump, I checked that already and there were no indications that coolant was leaking from either the pump. There is a piece of plastic under both the radiator and the a/c condensor and that is where the coolant is coming from. I had it checked out today and they identified the leak coming from a line going into the readiator. I still want to see if maybe there is a blown head gasket though.

Getting ready for my second radiator due to leaks. It leaks from the seam between the aluminum core and the plastic tanks, then drips down the side near the lower hose.

Yeah those plastic radiators are not worth a damn. I've had two develop cracks and need replacement, one in my Ford Explorer and one in my Chevy Van.
