I have a 1986 E350 with a 460, RV with dual tanks. If the vehicle sits for more than a few days, it takes forever to start (pumping the accelerator, cranking for about 5 seconds, then repeat this about 20 times). Once it starts, it runs fine and will restart fine unless it sits for a few days. After doing some reading it sounds like it's most likely draining the bowls through the cover or acc. pump gasket, so I'm going to either take it off and rebuild it, or just buy a rebuilt and put it on. In the meantime, I might just try the pushbutton fix to run the tank pumps in order to fill up the bowls before I crank it.
As for the carb, the markings stamped into it are:
E5HE-9510-EC
LIST - 50260-2
0726
From what I understand, this is a Holley carb, the top number is the Ford OEM number, which doesn't mean much, and the Holley number is 50260-2. However, when I try to use the lookup tools on the Holley website, nothing comes up for this number in terms of a rebuild kit.
My questions are:
1. What is the rebuild kit part number for this carb?
2. What other carb part numbers could I look for if I decide to just swap the whole thing?
Some may differ, but my belief is that the cause of this problem is due to modern gasoline formulations. It doesn't completely evaporate in the carburetor bowl, but the "light ends" and volatiles do.
Try pouring a few tablespoons of fresh gasoline down the carb throat and re-install the air cleaner.
Actually, I went at lunch and tried the fuel pump thing. I shorted battery to the "I" connection on the starter solenoid and I could hear the pump running. I shorted it for about 30 seconds and then went to start it and it started up right away. It's been sitting for a year before that attempt. In the past, it would take much cranking before getting enough fuel in the bowls.
I still plan to either rebuild or replace the carb, so my above questions on that still stand.
i think they stopped making the rebuild kits for those carbs long ago. Holly never really offered them either. they are basically a 600cfm 1850 series Holley carb with modified passages for emissions to Ford specs. i have used the universal Holly rebuild kit that includes a bunch of different gaskets and matched the old gasket to new gasket and made a few extra holes to match.
you can also swap in Holley 600 cfm (or for that matter any size you want) 1850 vacuum secondary carb and it will bolt right in place. might have to fool around with jetting and vacuum springs to get it just perfect, but even out of the box they are pretty close. they are very common and for sale at just about every parts place or website.
