Europeans seem to take better care of the land. We loved Switzerland.

I agree the landscape is a lot cleaner. But the population is considerably less. America is getting lazy and over populated.
But Europe doesn't have the freedoms Americans have.
Look at portland, I visited many years ago and it was a beautiful place. Look at it now. Not sure what's happening, but it's not good.

Every country is different in Europe, that's what nice about it is. Norway is very clean, southern Italy completely the opposite with fridges floating down the rivers and Naples ist just drowning in rubbish. Switzerland is clean too, but try living there without a huge income - I tend to drive through without stopping.
Speed limits are also bit random - Norway is a long country but has a strict 50mph, Switzerland also strict but a bit faster, Italy is 80mph but that used to be widely ignored, and Germany is still pretty much go for it.
The languages are another thing. Some countries have English as a second language, so no problem, others have shopkeepers who would rather lose a sale than speak it - like Paris.
Europe is too socialist and I'm too old to move away, I'm just making the best of it

Yeah, we've not had a great desire to visit Italy. Norway, Sweden, Finland we'd still like to go.

Alcohol (+ Diesel) is extremely expensive here.
I only want to save my smuggled beer supply from home with the local beer
This can of beer in the pic costs the equivalent of $US 3.50.
A gallon of diesel is the equivalent of $US 6.95.
How much diesel the 6.0 is eating, you know yourself.
The gas station staff always wave friendly

For me, Italy is one of the best places in the world to live. 6 years ago I got the choice, engineer at one of the Italian sites or get promoted and move to Belgium. The site is close to lake Garda and Valpolicello - I am in love with Amarone, Ripasso and the local cheese - but Promotion was the decision. Now I visit as often as I can and stock up. The previous engineer is American and stayed on after retirement so there'll always be good contact with the local vineyards. I'm hoping to get down there in September.

Our grandson spent his high school senior year with a family in Viterbo and really loved it.

Above Bolagna, agreed, I'd be fine there.

Last year I drove completely directly at the ocean once around Ireland. The landscape there is even more magnificent. If I had known that you enjoy the pictures, I would have posted pictures from the last trip. In the cities there is probably the same problem with the garbage everywhere. But last year in Ireland I had to wait at a traffic light in the countryside. There I watched how on the other side of the road a man got out of his car and picked up a small piece of paper from the ground to keep the landscape clean. This is just a small example of how people there "tick"

At the base of the alps is best, as you say. It's not as clean as Ireland, but so much better than southern Italy.
