Check the bottom of the wire harness for the 42 pin connector where it crosses over the captains side valve cover. Been known to rub thru and cause intermittent electrical issues.
Does the engine actually quit running? Wait to start light on the dash come on?
Check your CPS wiring down to the sensor. If it is cutting out, there is a pending code. I recently found my CPS wiring insulation falling apart and shorting the CPS signal to ground. This was between the water pump and EBP tube against the front cover. Exact same symptoms.
I had the same problem as NicMike but mine was with the ICP wiring where it had been replaced previously. As these trucks age, the wiring seems to be becoming more of a problem.
All good things to check listed above. I'll add make sure the tinnerman nut on the IPR is snug.
I checked all that and still had momentary cutout of the engine, with cutout time getting longer. Turned out to be the ignition switch on the steering column. Go figure.
With engine running, just knock on the PCM and see if it shuts down. Folks with chips sometimes don't get the torque on the firewall right and a pothole or RR tracks will knock the truck out.
Just got back from camping today. Work 16hrs tomorrow and supposedly massive protests I’ll get stuck working on Saturday. Sunday I’ll pop that hood and see what I can find.
So I followed the CPS wire up and it joins the wires for the HPOP and EBPV tube. About 2” past this conjecture, there was a area that was already taped from the previous owner. On the underside of this tape was one of the bolts for the large aluminum cover that covers the injectors etc. it’s seems like the top of this bolt had rubbed all the way through this tape and the wiring. I retaped all of it (white electrical), and also used some zip ties to pull it up and off of the cover/bolt.
I’m hoping this will do it. I should know in the next few weeks if it cuts out again.
if it does it will be quite a day of disconnecting it all, pulling the entire CPS wire last up and accessing all of them to check for breaks. I attempted to do this today but it will require me removing the AC pulley among other thing to be able to pull the entire wire up and get to it
About 30 years ago my wife's van would just die at random times. Spent $100's at different shops, and it just kept happening. One day while we were looking at it a friend come up, asked what was going on.... smiled and said I bet I know what it is..... reached down and yanked on the ground wire.... sparks flew everywhere. The ground on block was loose.... duh....
