Which CPS do I want/need?

2001 F-350 7.3, 45kmi. I've had the truck for about a year and a half. The engine would just stop running sometimes, but would almost always start back up and be fine. It has gradually gotten worse. It seems rough roads, bumps etc. could cause it. Even shutting the door while idling could cause it. I was told when I bought it that the CPS had been changed "recently" but not sure when, and obviously with only 40kmi on it at the time it had spent a lot of time not being used over the previous 18 years.

It's now dying a lot and doesn't always crank back up. So I'm convinced the CPS is the problem and from what I've read, even if it was changed at some point that may not mean much. If it persists after changing it, I'll look further. It is a cheap part after all.

So my question is: There seem to be three available. All from Ford: F7TZ-12K073-A - Original Black, F7TZ-12K073-B - Light Gray, F7TZ-12K073-C - Dark-Gray/Blue/Purple. Which one do I need? I understand the Black (A) can be hard to find, and is probably crap anyway. And I've heard Light Gray (B) and Dark Gray (C) had different material pins and that might be an issue. Both are $20-$25 on Amazon. Is there a simple answer, or a guide to them? Or a thread here I should read?

Thanks!!!

I don’t know the answer of which Ford CPS is best but until the more knowledgeable folks show up I’ll share this with you.
Riffraff Diesel is a very well respected dealer for 7.3 parts. I expect he would sell the “best” version available. Here is a link to the part.

Mornin' Gents! Consider faulty wiring....I was having similar issues with my 01 Ex, and no codes. One shop suspected CPS, didn't work. Another shop, IPR, nope. Still no codes. Third guy, finds multiple frays, open crimps, etc, in engine wiring harness. I opted to replace entire vs repair(didnt want issues to rear ugly heads ever again).!

A typo in that RiffRaff article. F4TZ12K073C is the Dark BLUE version.

Thanks all! It looks like Riff Raff is a good resource I should know about anyway. I ordered a dark blue (C) sensor and will report back with how it works.

I have the dark blue, light gray, and original black sensors on hand as emergency spares. I kept all three in the truck, along with a wrench set to change them, for years. But I haven't needed to yet. As my original equipment black cps, as installed by International during the original assembly of my engine, is now well into its 20th year of service, without a single fault (except for when a different PCM was being tested in the truck for about an hour)... it's hard to argue against the original black, and harder still to understand the recall.

I imagine from your point of view having zero issues with the OE part for 20 years that the recall would make sense. You got the one golden sensor! All of the Quality from Job One went into yours! Hahaha! I think I'll be keeping a spare in the truck too. But thanks for posting. The new sensor I just installed seems to have fixed my issues.

Thanks all. Installed the new dark blue sensor today and it seems to run fine so far. I think I'll be getting another and keeping it with a wrench in the truck. Super easy, quick install though. I was thinking it would be worse.
