Tailgate Removal - Anyone See Computer/Camera Problems?

Had camera issues with my now gone '17 after removing and reinstalling the tailgate.

Now, I would like to remove the tailgate on my 2019 from time to time so I can take a forklift delivery in the bed without cringing so much.

Does anyone remove and replace their tailgates with any frequency, and do you see computer or camera issues following this over time?

I have an 18, camera worked, I removed the tailgate and when I reinstalled it, the camera didn't work. This happened the only time I removed the tailgate, and I still haven't fixed the issue yet.

Did you ever fix the issue on your 17? If so, what was the problem?

Never got to the bottom of it. Sold it.

My take was that disconnecting and reconnecting did something in the start up of the computer. When the computer didn't read the camera for the first time, it never reset to factory ever again.

I pulled my tailgate and won’t be installing again until fall. But, not wanting to be without the camera, I bought a second camera and installed it on the back of the truck. While testing positions and such, I easily unplugged and plugged it in more than a dozen times, worked fine every time. The Fakra connector used for the tailgate connection is a good connector, much better than the standard plugs used on some of the cameras in other locations.

According to my dealer. These new er cameras are poorly designed and the cause of the problem. They are currently redesigning the cameras but have not been released yet and can't say when they will be. My 18's backup camera hasn't worked for about 2 months now, and after 4 trips to the dealer it still dosen't. If the end result is a better camera I'll wait for it.

On my 2017 F350 had to remove the tailgate when it met my fifth wheel pin box. Never had any issues before or after it was all put back new. Pulled all connectors on both the 2017 and now the 2019 F450 to ensure everything is properly sealed up and tight without issue.

I took the tailgate off my new 2020 F350 Lariat to install a truck camper. The factory included a tailgate removal harness plug kit in the glove box presumably to keep the connections clean. I had to remove 4 connectors to remove the tailgate which is not light due, possibly do to the pull out step assembly. I would like to mount a camera on the back of the truck camera that would work with the factory dash screen and SYNC3. Has anyone tried this or can I just purchase a second tailgate camera and mount it on the back of the camper and plug it into the factory harness? Of course the camper blocks the camera on the back of the cab so all I have working right now is the forward camera. Thanks for any assistance.

I do it all the time on my19. No problems at all. I got the wrong plug kit for it when bought new. The dealer got the right one and away I went.
