STRANGE C6 Issue

Alright I’ve got an issue and I’m hoping for some input.

Recently I bought a 1990 F-250 with an EFI 351w in it. 39k original miles!!! The only problem was the C6. Forward clutch assembly was roasted. No big deal. I just got finished rebuilding it (myself so I can answer any and all questions about it). Put the C6 back in the truck, ran GREAT for 20 or 30 miles. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ALL GOOD, excellent shifting and smooth.

Last night I turned around in a parking lot just slow and steady-forward reverse forward. After that, the C6 will no longer shift out of 1st. I can however shift out of 1st manually on the column shifter. I am able to shift out of 1st, but I have to do it.

So the things I’m thinking are: vacuum problem or modulator problem, valve body issue, or governor issue.

I am having a hard time justifying valve body or governor issue though because it’s got brand new fresh fluid in it and I clean both these components, verified valves were all freed up. Maybe now that the truck is running again and back to life after a year minimum of not running, it busted a vacuum line somewhere?

Any input would be appreciated on where to begin.

Verify vacuum at the modulator with a gauge, make sure the kick down linkage is not in a bind or being pulled.

Might want to pull the pan to check and see if there is any metal that might be getting in the valve body and or governor.

With the valve body off you can air check the valve body and watch the shift valves move, if all looks good there may be a problem with the governor.

Thanks JK.

Ill check this out. I think I’m going to go after the vacuum first, yesterday I noticed a screamin vacuum leak and when I disconnected the modulator line, no more screaming. Am making one of those cheap smoke leak detectors with a soldering iron and a pickle jar to track it down since I couldn’t pin point it lol.

Hoping this fixes it once I solve the potential vac issue. If not I’ll pull the pan and do those checks.

Thanks!

Ok so I got my truck hooked up to a smoke machine to find a leak. I got a bunch of smoke coming out of my EGR. Is this normal? I was expecting to see smoke coming from somewhere on the modulator vac line but nothing. Only leak I found was out of the EGR and now I’m trying to figure out if this is normal or not.

I am not sure about the EGR something tells me its normal...

I would use a vacuum gauge at the modulator, forget the smoke machine. The vacuum line or intake could be plugged or restricted and you will have no vacuum and no smoke.

The vacuum line to the modulator should be connected to manifold vacuum.

Understand what you’re saying. I actually hooked up the smoke machine to the modulator vacuum line at the modulator and blocked the intake with a rag. I agree though, even if I am getting vacuum at the modulator, still good to test what it actually reads. I’ll forget about the EGR for now lol yeah not sure either.

Ahh that makes more sense I usually connect at the intake somewhere.

Check out this extremely minuscule metal chip that was binding up my governor. Decided I was tired of chasing a potentially nonexistent vacuum leak and went for the gov. Sure enough had a valve in a bind. Look how small that thing is on the end of my pick.

Going to button it up shortly and take it for a drive.
