I have a 2002 f250 7.3l extended cab long box. I just replaced the u joints on the rear driveshaft. I got Dana 5-160x (greasable) u joints from rock auto. From what I’ve read these should be the right u joints for my truck but when I installed them there was lots of play in the joint at the rear yoke and in the middle joint. This isn’t my first time replacing these joints but I’ve never had this problem before.
Has anyone run into this? Are these the right u-joints? Or are they actually too small?
For now I just shimmed them until I can figure out which u joints I actually need.
The u-joint you bought is the wrong one. There is probably a few different u-joints for your truck. Go back online or to the local parts house and have them look up your u-joint. The the number is different than the one you bought.
I’ve never heard of shimming a u joint either lol. That was definitely just a temporary measure to get it back on the road.
I double checked the u joints I got and it says they’re compatible with my truck. It looks like there were two different sizes they could’ve used, 4.188” and 3.625” and all the brands listed on rock auto showed one of those two measurements. Mine are definitely not the 3.625” so I have to assume they are 4.188”.
I guess I’ll hit a parts store to see what they can come up with but It just seems weird that different brand u joints stating a measurement of 4.188 would actually fit differently.
