You can run tow haul or lock out upper gears as needed with the shifter. I have a 18, 19 & 20 truck all equipped the same 3.5 max tow.
Yep, I actually love this 10 speed tranny. I pulled my 7300 lb. 5th wheel with my F-150 a few weeks ago for the first time. Locked out 9th and 10th and it pulled very well in 8th alone.
By locking out a gear you mean enabling "manual" mode and holding the gear in place? Sorry, new to the truck/towing/hauling scene.
You can do it a few ways. If in automatic mode, when you "downshift" using the + and - on the shifter, it will lock out the upper gears as far down as you select. So with the 10 speed, if you click - 3 times, you'll lock out 8th, 9th, and 10th gears.
The other way is to simply put the shifter in Manual mode which lets you select exactly which gear to use and the transmission will remain there, to an extent. I say to an extent because, if you're on the highway in manual mode and select 8th gear, if you slow down to the point that the transmission is going to stall the engine, the transmission will automatically downshift to prevent stalling.
Overall, I wouldn't say the logic of the transmission is flawless and perfect, but I would say it's pretty damn good.
Cool man thanks! Good info. I was searching out an aftermarket trans cooler but i think ill hold off for now.
If your truck came with the Max Tow package, then it has a factory trans and engine cooler added.
My 2018 F-150 has this package and I pulled my 5th wheel that weights 7300 lbs. with a 850 lb pin weight. We probably had it loaded around 7600 lbs. and 950 lb. pin weight. Our trip was about 2500 miles total from Oklahoma to Wyoming and up around the mountains (northern Colorado and western Wyoming) and back to Oklahoma. We didn't have any issues with the truck powertrain. It pulled very well. The suspension on the otherhand isn't really well suited for payload. I have a payload rating of 1600 lbs. With the 5th wheel, we maxed that out. I'm currently looking to upgrade to an F-350.
Hmmmm. So can another be added? Like a front mounted one? To double up protection? I seriously doubt ill ever tow anything. Its more like piece of mind insurance. Im honestly more interested in building this into an Overland type setup. cab rack, bed rack, roof top tent, etc. I dont own any boats or ATV's so no need for a trailer. But then again, you never know now that i have a truck!

You can, there is AN adapters available to run lines up front. Its not needed as you will find. The package cooler is pretty efficient and can handle some heat because its very efficient.
