Normal non towing average temperature should be in the 140-150 range.
It depends on where the temperature is being monitored from.
Under towing conditions, it depends on the load, and road for trans loading plus ambient temperature..
Under high loads and length of time on a hill, the temps can go into the 250 range. Beyond that temp is a risk running to long a time.
Like said, it depends.
Good luck.
As posted by blue grass, towing temp varies alot, like terrain, elevation, weight, and head winds and ambient temp, optimal would be 180°-210° even at 220° you can get away. Install a bigger tranny cooler and you wont have to worry if your towing.
Thanks... It has the oem auxiliary cooler , looks like it's a decent size, sensor is driver side right above the pan , pressure test port.
Scrubbed and cleaned the fins last fall, built a small shroud behind the grill to direct air flow directly on the cooler. Not sure why they put the cooler in an odd place.
No temp gauge in mine... nut be sure to lock it out of overdrive (O/D off on the shifter).
Be aware of how often it is shifting back and forth and whether the torque converter is locked... that's what makes temp climb the quickest.
I have seen more troubles with the guys who keep it floored on a long grade to maintain speed... be it overheating the engine, transmission or both... or burning up a transmission.
Find a speed that it will hold with less than 3/4 throttle and not shifting back and forth... change the fluid every 25k or so... then it will live a long happy life.
I like the graph, pretty simple to understand.
So far it looks like my temperature is right on for non towing, the other day ambient temperature was about 90* driving around small hills stop and go trans got up to high 150's nbd.
