just a quick update. Got the top end tore apart. Obviously damage on #5 piston. The 7th piston is fine looking but head area is pretty rough.
Would you guys get the head machined or just get a reman? If I get it machined, will they have to machine the block as well or can I have them pull sleeves etc and put the standard oem back in?
also whats best way to check bore?
This was the 5th piston/cyclinder. Id say it had a issue. Head view from the 5 7 area. The overheat on the head wasn't broke so the head didn't get overheated. No idea what caused the piston to break up.
Spoke with machine shop. Going to go the reman route or possibly used route if I can find a decent one. Theres a place that's 3 hrs away that has 2 for $175 each but I'm assuming they haven't been tested etc and just pulled out/used.
Anyone have recommendations on remanned etc. I don't feel confident in rebuilding one myself. And the machine shop basically said it could be $1,000+ for them to rebuild one. The remans ive seen one run 600-800.
If I replace one should I just say **** it and replace the other as well? Also if I'm staying oem with no tunes I can stay with the aluminum vs forged pistons correct?
Other issue is I could have sworn I saw that it was sleeved. Machine shop is saying they don't come sleeved as standard, but if so itll help out as far as cost goes. Is this correct on the sleeve thing as far as not a oem thing?
No sleeves on these, as for heads if there is no cracks on the them you can still use your beat up heads, it wont affect how the engine performs. Your best bet since your not doing the work is to get a used engine or if you have the $$ get a reman engine.

I'm doing all the work but the machining part and putting it back in. The rebuild and tear down etc is all myself. So far I've got around 3200 in it. That's labor for R&I, oem rebuild kit, turbo rebuild kit, and a few other things(replacing fuel pump, new fuel tank, and such since I'm tearing everything apart and they got my flatbed off to reinforce the bracing)
