I've decided that my stock temp gauge is no longer trustworthy, so I'd like to replace the whole thing with an aftermarket sending unit, gauge, and wiring.
Does the stock coolant temp sensor do anything more than drive the gauge? I seem to remember that they have something to do with the electric choke or the distributor advance...?
Nope, the temp sensor is only for the gauge. The choke gets it's input from the stator terminal on the alternator and on some models the vacuum advance is partially controlled by PVS (ported vacuum switches).
