Loose Steering

My truck has the spring assisted steering box at the end of the column and I've gone and tightened the adjustment down as far as I possibly can, but my truck still likes to wander a bit. There isn't as much play anymore, but there's very little resistance as I'm turning and driving. Any suggestions? One thought was to try and mock up a modern steering stabilizer to add some resistance and make it a bit harder to turn while I'm driving, another thought was to try and replace the spring that's in the steering box since it seems to have maxed out and possibly lost its' ability to hold tension.

I have nothing other than I'm interested in this thread as well... My 65 is the same way, a little wandering.. Although I have no clue what spring assisted is/looks like... Hope to learn something here... Thanks and sorry for intruding... Jack...

Are you talking about the adjustment on the steering box? If it's wandering how are the tie rods, drag links, king pins and all the components up front? I want to see this spring thing also

Yeah, sorry, the nut/screw on the top of the steering box. I just kind of assumed it was some sort of spring under there.

I just replaced the kingpins and radius arm bushings. Come to think of it the tie rod ends were pretty loose.. I'll have to double check those in the morning.

Lift one front wheel off the ground and have a buddy wiggle the wheel L-R while you get under and see what's worn out in the linkage. Then get a digging bar and put it under the wheel and have your buddy lift up & down while you see if there's play in the King pins, do this on both sides.

What you are adjusting on is the worm bearing preload. That has to be done with the steering box out of the truck using an inch pound torque wrench. If you screw that thing down tighter than it is supposed to be all you will accomplish is the destruction of your steering box. Changing that adjustment will not heal worn out parts.

Ah well.. Thanks CD. I'll refrain from touching that anymore. It hasn't locked up so I guess I didn't destroy it

Suspect U have already checked front suspension adjustments, suggest block rear wheels, raise the front end and test the movement on each wheel from side to side and up down; possibly issue with wheel bearings, seals/ bushings, worn front suspension components or not torque to spec's, similar experience checked and found the radius arm bushings on my 65 were not torqued to spec's?

When I changed the radius arm bushings on my 65, it changed toe-in and was really squirrely. Torqued bushings to specs and reset my toe in, better after that.
