Timing Advance

So I was checking my timing and advance on the 1962 223 earlier and it was set to about 0 deg and only advanced up to maybe 10 deg, I know timing is should be 4 deg BTDC so got that changed and seems to idle better and doesn't pop when you let off the gas anymore. But I was wondering how far should it advance.

In the shop manual for the load-o-matic distributor it does not give a total with vacuum advance hooked up. They simply say to watch the timing marks with your light and make sure it moves when you accelerate the engine. Total advance on a vacuum only system will depend greatly on the age and overall condition of the motor since vacuum varies depending on how tight the engine is, RPMs, etc.

I run 8 degrees BTDC but am using a 240/300 distributor converted to a 223 to get both mechanical and vacuum advance. The performance increase is amazing. My advice is to toss the Load Matic (save the 12 tooth drive gear for the conversion). Another alternative would be to find a Mallory YC or ZC 313 dual point flat top and install it.

I did not realize it didn't have any mechanical advance, I guess that's what I get for assuming it had both mechanical and vacuum. approaching 112k mi and sat for who knows how many decades before I started working on it and driving it maybe a mile a week if that so condition can be questionable I guess, did a manifold vacuum test couple weeks back and it was reading 16-17.
