I have been trying to revive this truck after a few years of my son's college abuse. It has about 235k on the odometer.
The transmission has an issue that I would like to address and thought I would just get some of your opinions first before taking it to a shop or just fixing it myself. After my last experience I do not trust trans repair shops so I would like to know as much as possible.
The symptom is that it slams into gear when down shifting. So, when I accelerate hard and it downshifts it slams hard into the lower gear and I'm hesitant to try this again with this truck.
I don't know if, or when, it has had a fluid change or filter change. The original owner has all records and I cant find where the fluid has been changed. I have dropped the pan and changed oil and filter on my 1999 F250 SD so I'm a little familiar with basics.
Any help with the diagnosis would be much appreciated!
The first step in diagnostics is to read the codes. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. Forscan (available for free download at www.forscan.org) is a great way to do it. You will also need an ELM327 adapter, available on Amazon for about $30. Or you could take it to a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Without the codes, the only direction I can give you is to replace the part that isn't right.

I bought the ELM327 adapter (wifi) then down loaded Forscan app onto my phone and it will not connect, I also down loaded another diag app and it would not work either.
Ill have to find someone who can read it.

I too had issues with an Amazon "highly rated" ELM327 adapter, wouldn't connect or be recognized with my Windows laptop computer purchased for ForScan use. Finally bit the bullet and order this version: TCD ELM Adapter
ts NOT cheap but works perfectly for a much more reliable wired connection:

More of how I came to own one............Bought a Windows 7 Dell laptop manufacturer refurbished for a very good price. Two different cheap ELM327 adapters couldn't be recognized by the laptop when Forscan was open, had a friend load Win10 and same thing although the LT would seem to at least see the ELM when connected to certain USB ports. Friend reloaded Win7, better ELM found immediately, recognized and works great.
I'm okay spending more money for a good tool---most of mine will or have lasted 20 years or more so I'm "saving" money?
Below are the results of the Forscan read
Since my original post I have changed the transmission oil and now the vehicle doesnt engage into Drive unless I raise the rpm u til it slowly locks in. Going into reverse is normal immediate engagement.

My guess is a damaged forward clutch. If you do a few engagements where you raise the RPM to get it to engage I can guarantee that you will have a damaged forward clutch. That is really, really hard on a clutch.
Thanks Mark.
Wonder why it started that after the oil change? I did the change by pumping out of the cooler line two qts at a time until it was changed.
