89 F-150 Problems

Guys,just got this truck,it has a 302,auto/overdrive transmission,2wheel drive,limited slip 355 gears,with tow pkg.
Just turned 50,never owned a ford,do most my own repairs and
need some info,please.
My gear selector has a D with a circle around it and another one without, what transmission would i have?
Is the limited slip the same as posi traction in GM?
Are 355 gears high or low for this truck?
I belive i have a rear main engine seal leaking,i know the transmission must be pulled little too old for that stuff, what might the cost of this repair be?
This is the xlt model, power door locks .My remote push
button will not work. Put a new battery in it with no luck but will get a red light when pushed.Any ideas? The power door lock buttons in the truck work fine.
With 95000 miles would you guys change the rear end gear lube?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts !

Wow, you had a ton of questions there !

Sounds like you have an automatic transmission with an over drive gear...

It sure wouldn't hurt to change the gear lube in the rear differencial... The lube in mine has been changed about 4 times already. If I were you as long as I was at the rear end, I'd pull the axels out and put new axel seals in. The axels come out so easy, just take out the C clips and slide them out.

Well, I have to go to work... going to put some over time in today. No rest for the wicked they say... I must be very wicked !

Mike, welcome, the 3.55 is a good range of gear for an automatic limited slip is the same as posi traction never played with one of those little buttons so I can't help you there and your rear main price depends where you get it done!!! The d with the circle around it is definitely overdrive but I don't know when they changed from e4od to the newer style trans I think you still have the e4od in that truck. 95,000 miles, that should last quite a while, they turn next to nothing for rpms at highway speed. Limited slip isn't the same as posi, posi means positive traction, in other words both wheels always turn the same speed, but in limited slip one wheel can turn a slightly slower speed than the other, and when one slips, the power is taken away from it and sent to the other wheel, one quick way to check is do a burnout and turn the steering wheel back and forth rear fast, mine with limited slip will leave a double peel mark for about 15 feet, then it goes over to the right tire on a right turn and the left tire on a left turn...

Chevies version of limited slip is a posi traction which means positive traction and does the same thing as a limited slip My truck turns all the wheels the same speed no matter what but it has detroit lockers in it my mustang has limited slip and it will burn both back wheels the same even if you saw the wheel back and forth so I'm assuming you need to replace the cluthes in your rear. Mike:

My gear selector has a D with a circle around it and another one without, what transmission would i have?

--You have the AOD. This is a non-electronic tranny. Not the E40d.

Are 355 gears high or low for this truck?

--I don't think they are to high. In fact there almost perfect. These acheive good mileage, and have good power for towing.

I belive i have a rear main engine seal leaking,i know the transmission must be pulled little too old for that stuff, what might the cost of this repair be?

--This a common factor for a higher mileage 5.0L. My 1993 is doing the same. Not too bad yet.

This is the xlt model, power door locks .My remote push
button will not work. Put a new battery in it with no luck but will get a red light when pushed.Any ideas? The power door lock buttons in the truck work fine.

--I installed a aftermarket keyless in my 1993 F-150 this past fall. The wiring is behind a kick panel on the passenger side. Inside you should find a green conector. Make sure all the wires are hooked up. When you push the unlock button, it should klick. If not there' s a problem somewhere.

With 95000 miles would you guys change the rear end gear lube?

--Your getting really close to it's time. The fluid should be replaced at exactly 100k. I would do it or at least have it checked by a mechanic.
