Does the 3.55 performance axle really help performance?

I was wondering if anyone here has a Ranger with the 4.0 ohv, automatic transmission, and the 3.55 performance limited slip axle? I've always been driving my 98 Ranger with the 2.5, auto, and 7.5 4.10 open rear end. Now I got this 92 Ranger 4.0, auto, 8.8 3.08 open rear end with only 100,000 miles when I got it. It runs good, idles good, everything works, transmission is strong, and it gets 18-20 mpg. It pegs out to 85 fairly easily but doesn't feel powerful. My 98 2.5 takes off a lot quicker and tops out a lot more. I'm just curious I'm not attempting to make a fast Ranger. I just figured the 4.0 ranger would be a little more exciting driving. But it's lazy. It's in a good state of tune, everything's in good working order. Back in the 92 dealer brochure they called the 4.0 the performance engine for the ranger when equipped with the 3.55 performance limited slip axle. So I know the gearing is making a huge difference between the take off on my 98 4 cylinder vs my 92 6 cylinder. But does the 4.0 automatic, equipped with that 3.55 performance axle offer anymore feeling of power?

Yes 3.55 gears will make your 4.0 truck perform better, Ford should be shot for putting 3.08 gears in a truck with an overdrive transmission. I don't have a 4.0 Ranger but I have two 3.0 Rangers one with 3.45 gears and the other with 4.10 gears, and without a doubt the 4.10 geared truck performs much better.

I have a '94 Ranger XLT 2wd 4.0 OHV Automatic. My diff. gear ratio is 3.73:1. I've never felt like it didn't accelerate fast enough. When I got it in '99, 59k miles, I got wheel hop if I mashed the pedal from a dead stop & could practically do donuts on dry pavement (I didn't try). It's got 193k now, it's slower, but I still have no complaints. I need to de-carbon & tune it up, too.
