1990 5.8 litre

Hey Guys,

I was given a 1990 F250 XLT it needs an engine. The heads are off of it and long gone, the lower end has an unkown history so I am not going to chance by putting heads on it.

So what engines are compatible and are there any issues with different years, accessory bolts, computer etc, etc..? Any info is appreciated.

Is a new 5.8 compatible and does anybody have an idea of cost for a new long block?

Thanks,
John

You didn't mention what size engine is in your truck currently. If it is a 351W, the 302 and the 300-6 will bolt up to the same bellhousing. Going froma V-8 to a I-6 (or vice versa) takes alot of small parts to make the swap work, i.e. engine mounts, radiator and hoses, accessory brackets, starter, flywheel and other stuff I can't remember. The 460, 429, 370 have a different bellhousing bolt pattern. Going from a 351W to a 460 is probably as much headache as going from the 351W to the I-6.
A new or rebuilt 351W long block will cost anywhere from $1000 or so to around $2500, depending on how much you want to deviate from stock.

the truck has an EFI 5.8 in it now and I want to replace it with the identical set up. What spsn of years are going to be compatible with this set up?

Thanx,

I am not familiar with the differences in heads thru the years on a 351W, I am sure there is a range of years that would work, but I can't tell you what that is (EGR provisions being the key component here). Concerning a short block assembly, anything with a compression ratio between 8.5 and 9.5 and a mild cam should work with your speed density fuel injection setup.
There are some guys on here that really are sharp on the fuel injection/emission part of Ford trucks, I am sure they can give you better advice than I can in that area.
Good Luck,
