Have a 1993 F150 XLT, 5.0, E4OD with cruise control issues. I have worked on this issue and have even taken it to a shop which could not isolate the problem. The issue is when the cruise does engage it will not stay engaged long before it kicks out for no apparent reason. The buttons at the steering wheel have been replaced while other components have been tested and found good. Leading theory now is the clock switch. Before pulling the steering wheel I have been trying to find a new clock switch with no success. Specifically my F150 is not equipped with an air bag and all the clock switches found are for F150s with air bags. I have called manufacturers of aftermarket parts without success. I'm leery of using a clock switch from a salvage yard. Any thoughts or suggestions will most appreciated.
ifrythings: Thanks for the response. Would you happen to know the Ford part number for the assembly you've referenced or confirm that F4UZ-13806-A is the related part number..
I don’t know the part number for those parts but this thread Steering wheel wobble says it should be F4UZ-13806-B. Hopefully someone else can confirm that for you.
Usually when these wear out you can’t set cruise control or honk the horn or sometimes only when the wheel is at a certain position. If your able to set cruise and it randomly turns off it’s very unlikely to be the slip rings and brushes.
First thing I would look at is the cruise deactivation switch that’s either on the master cylinder or down on the frame rail below the master cylinder. That switch likes to leak and can burn down your truck.
Again thanks. Regarding deactivation switch, this truck's is located on the frame and it has been replaced. My situation is the horns work. The cruise seldom engages and will only stay engaged for a short period. When the cruise does not engage a low hum or buzzing sound can be heard while the "set" button is depressed. Our theory is the noise may be caused by low voltage to the horns through the contacts. Bit of a reach maybe but running out of ideas.
