Can someone explain to me how to keep the damn nuts from backing out in the hubs? At least 6x in past year I’ve had to tighten them, I’ve put in new washers and still the damn things come out. I’m about ready to junk this axle and out a 44 back in it. There is absolutely no reason for them to keep backing out. What replacement better nuts has anyone used?? I’m going to put new bearings, seals and some other kind of nuts in this time. Both hubs are wobbling and I just put new washers in a month ago. 😡😡
Have you tried to source some self locking ratchet style front hub, nut/washer/nut in one assembly? Try the dealership for them? I know they make them for a D44, so I am pretty sure they make them for a D60.
Yes, twice ive had rear axle do this, the 6x is front. I’m doing everything correctly and it still
loosens up. I’m so tired of fighting with it. The truck was once dependable enough to drive to southern Missouri, now I don’t trust it across town.
I was cruising at 70 when I was only give a 5 second warning before I watched my tire slide out from under the wheel well and shoot across 3 lanes. It never squealed or leaked. I haven't driven it more than 30 miles from the house since then. Now after hearing all these issues I am worried about driving it 300-400 miles through the mountains this Fall to go hunting.
These are what you need, plenty of sets on Ebay for around $50. They might not solve the problem now though. When a front hub comes loose the inner bearing can beat up the area on the spindle that it seats / tightens up against. Once that happens it will never stay tight. If that's the case, you might be able to put the spindle in a lathe and reface that area so the bearing can seat again. Take off as little as possible because they don't leave much extra spindle threads. One other thing, I would make sure the inner race in the hub is still tight in the hub. When one is ran loose it can ruin the register in the hub making the race loose in the hub.
I was having a problem like this on my D44. The washer with the tab had become enlarged and when I would tighten the outer lock nut it would cause the washer to jump out of the groove in the spindle. It all seemed like it was tight but the whole thing would loosen up cause the lock washer wasn’t working correctly.
You may need to replace your locking washer or it could be that your spindle groove is warn out.
If it’s the spindle groove that’s the problem it is possible to have a new groove machined into the spindle.
