I have a 1956 F100, the speedometer works fine, but the odometer does not. As I drive, the odometer wheel turns for the first mile but does not advance the next wheel. I suspect an issue with the pegs? Anybody have any ideas also I cannot find any used odometer parts without buying the entire Speedohead.
Welcome to the board!
Its been years since I messed with an odometer. And I've never had one apart in an old Ford. My guess would be that the odometer is gummed up with old grease/oil etc.
I know on GM vehicles up through the mid 80's you could take the odometer out of the speedo head and manipulate the various wheels as needed. It might be worth taking it out to have a look
There was a thread on here sometime back where someone reset the numbers back to 00000.0 . if someone recalls the thread I wouldn't mind saving it to reset mine for this project if I don't buy an aftermarket unit..
When IO bought my 55 F350, I thought the odometer worked becasue I could see the tenths digits moving. But after a while I realized the ones column wasn't moving. I took out the whole instrument panel and cleaned it up and painted the needles while I was at it. I took the speedo out and I could see a tooth was knocked out making it impossible for the ones column to move.
I had another speedo head so I thought I could just switch the odometers but they were slightly different So I had to put the whole speedo unit in. Easy fix.
