I am making myself crazy trying to calculate the tow capacity for my 1989 f350 dually, 460, 3.55 gears. The sticker has a GVWR of 10000 and has a 5th wheel hitch in the bed that says 16k on it. I would like to pull my RV but not sure if this truck can do it. Dry weight of the RV 5th wheel is also 11k. Any assistance is appreciated.
GVWR is everything you can carry in the bed and cab at one time without a trailer attached.
With the 5th wheel, or any trailer, you're not putting all of the weight of the camper on the truck. Usually it's about 10-15% for a bumper pull, and 20% with a 5th wheel.
So you'd be putting approximately 2200 pounds of weight in the truck. The truck probably weighs close to 5500-6000 pounds.
Keep in mind this would be a truck running in perfect/factory condition from engine to brakes to frame. But you should be fine.

Well an 11k fifth wheel is well outside the limits of the truck. These trucks were not rated very high factory especially not with 3.55 gears.

I assumed (and possibly incorrectly) that he has an E4OD, which can haul more than your guide which is manual transmissions. This is what I found from an 87 owners manual. Although I goofed and didn't add properly. His GCWR should be around 15k, I don't know if dually adds anymore towing capacity. But according to this he should be able to haul about a 9000 pound trailer.
Thanks,
Truck is in perfect mechanical condition, new adj shocks, coils, front suspension redone, new brakes and tires all around, engine and tranny are running without issue. I may add heavier springs on the back to keep level. If someone has a good setup, air bags, springs etc please let me know.

I towed a BMW e53 SUV on a uhaul auto transport trailer. 4,539.0 + 2,210= 6,740 llbs in my 97 F-250 HD 351W 8,600 GVWR. With a full tank of gas, my self, and some tools. It was a cinch.
