Well, finally got my D60 into my garage. Man are they hard to find! It's out of a 78 F350. When people say this thing weighs nearly 500 lbs.. they arent lying! Will be swapping into my 74 crew cab high boy that currently has a D44 LP. The guy also threw in a set of 4:10 gears (supposedly 3:54s in it now) and was told the hubs are good.. as you can see it needs some love. I am in no rush to swap it in so stay tuned for the tear down..
Brake shields are in rough shape but hope i can straighten them out with a little time and love.. I hear they are pretty rare.
He also threw in these heated mirrors. Any idea if they are OEM? i would think they would have a ford stamp in the back if they were.. and i know you can get them aftermarket online. Any thoughts?
That drivers side u bolt plate is a rare item at also. You could sell the pair of them and fund a u bolt flip up front, maybe even put a couple bucks in your pocket.

What makes the U-bolt plate so special? Would like to see a picture of it.
Well power washed and tore the 60 apart today and found some unpleasant surprises.. once the grease was gone found a crack on the back side driver side knuckle. seller says he didn't know and has another knuckle hes going to give me. Was expecting some issues.. but not to this extent.
quick to find more carnage..
guards are beat up badly
Seals look new!
Outer axle splines are shot.. both sides.
Bottom dif cover bolt gives an idea of this 60s rough life..
Was told 3:54 gears.
Fluid or mud?
Tie rod end nice and greased!...
onto the other side.
outers shot
Not looking too hot.
Pulled the carrier and found this... anyone seen this type of damage in this spot? pretty darn concerned about this...
WOW! That D60 has been rode hard. Most of those parts can still be purchased thru Spicer but not all of them. I have had good luck buying good used parts for them over at Pirate 4x4 forum. If you aren't a member there, you definitely should join, lots of good dudes there! https://www.pirate4x4.com/forums/
While you are at it, replace those junk warn lockouts with the original OEM factory Spicer lockouts!! Spicer is the best!! just my $.02
I'm pretty sure the 78/79 drivers side lower plate is unique from the others, it's the one you always see people looking for. They're usually selling in the $120-150 range on Ebay. Sets only go for $20-50 more because the pass side plate is the same up to '97.
Did the rust eat a big void into the casting around that seal? Is the seat face scored? If it's just a void, it shouldn't matter, as long as the shims and bearings can still seat correctly and the seal has full contact. A little RTV around the new seal should take care of any gaps.
The inner axle seal area should be ok. As long as the ring of the housing around the outside of the seal goes. If it is flat all the way around, It should be OK. It looks to have a couple of chips out of it, But that was probably from the machining operation at the Spicer plant. As long as the bearing race fits and does not rock around, should be good. Of course you need new seals, The diff shims go under the bearing cone, no under the race.
The heated mirrors, I know ford used them on a L9000 because one of the fire tankers we built had them from ford, The one on passenger side also had a rotation feature.
