ABS Code Help from Forscan

I had an ABS light yesterday on cold start that went away after a short driving distance. When I got a chance to scan it, I forgot to write the code down before I cleared it, but it was either C1159 or C1195. The code description was ABS relay something............. I did run the Forscan service function that I think was to "bleed" the ABS unit. I'm sorry for being such an idiot here, but my brakes seem to work "normally" for my truck. I'm hoping Jack can bail me out here.....

If it happens again, get the code. Relay codes are for the internal board, which would you need to replace the electronics. maybe it was just cranky. The computer or hardware unit itself are usually pretty robust, not a lot of failures.

Here the list of codes you can print out.

Actually, here is the 2003 ABS pdf for testing, 29 pages.

With an ABS failure, the brakes should work normally, but you may lose the ability for skid control.

I will get the code if it comes up again. I accidently "shut off" my laptop in the middle of diagnostics but I do remember the ABS relay part, so it may have been a C1185. Cataract surgery hasn't been kind to me the past couple of months but hard to get in to my eye doc with all the covid stuff to get them fixed. Reading is terrible, hence my absence from the forum.

Tim, understandable, sorry to hear that. I know two people that had issues with the surgery, too.

With all the states on restricted duty, there are going to be a lot of medical issues. One of my docs did a teleconference, all others are on hold, dentist on hold. Holding for a lung x-ray and spinal CT scan too.

With mechanical relays, minor arcing across the contacts is part of the normal process, it actually helps to clean them. If the truck has sat for some time, our 15+ years old trucks relays may have some extra amount of oxidation on the contacts that may clean with a few more restarts.

Of course, eventually the contacts erode out, but that should be 150k of engagements or so. It’s excessive arcing that wear them sooner.

Got it!! Thanks, Jack. I think you're right about 2 things going on. I replaced the rear ABS a while back and I'm thinking it's not reading correctly, either from "fuzz" on the sensor or wiring issues or both. I think the C1185 is from corrosion on the connector because the the rubber shield that used to cover the ABS unit was trashed by a tech a long time ago AND from the frequent rains that we experienced back in the spring. Getting to that is a project by itself. Amazon screwed me on my maintenance parts that I had ordered and they won't be here as promised, so that will have to wait until my eye surgery gets done (FINALLY!!!) and I can shut the truck down for a few days. Maybe I'll relent and do a total overhaul on the brake system, but that 5.0 coyote is howling loud.

Again, free parts in the waiting if you need them.

Good luck with the surgery. I'm chickening out on my delayed sinus surgery for now.

Thanks. I'm going to check those closely too. I have a dial indicator here that I haven't had available before. I just need more time than the good Lord is giving me right now. I'll be in touch.

I figured I should show you the hassle about this, the connector is at the bottom. There is a reason they put flex lines to this, and it's still a bear. The other thing to check is the integrity of the two rubber caps on the top. These seal ports that are used to show if the HCU has an issue causing a long brake pedal travel, but if someone did not reinstall them with good integrity, moisture can get down in there. These were eliminated in later years.

I did find that information and checked the caps Monday. Sealed and clean underneath. Mine looks new compared to the one in the picture, kinda.....lol

Would removing the core support be easier?? I have some experience with that, haha. At least I kinda know what I'm up against and the time I have to allow.
Great pic's!!!
