Trans options

I just bought a 96 f250 with the 351w and an e4od. The transmission is done for i was gonna swap it anyway with a manual transmission but i cant seem to find a 4x4 zf5 anywhere near me. I dont think i want to put an m5od behind it. Would an older 4 speed work. What concerns me is an older 4 speed not working with the ecm properly

Neither would the ZF or M5OD. The computer would be looking for the E4OD with any manual transmission in its place. What is wrong with the E4OD that leads you to believe it is “done for?”

If it helps...

I am starting my swap as we speak 95 f150 5.8 4x4 E4OD to M5OD. I wasn’t able to locate a ZF either so I’m going to start with the M5OD. If a ZF comes along and the price is good then I’ll swap them out.

I don’t drive crazy and I have another truck for hauling. There are no future plans for engine upgrades, so M5OD fits my budget, current and future plans.

Well i was going to get another ecm regardless. And my reverse and first went out. I wanted to 5 speed swap it anyway. And i do haul here and there but not enough to need a 460. So with a manual trans ecm could i put a 4 speed in it. I dont think theres any signals between the ecm and a zf5 is there?

You don’t really need to swap out the computer. It will just always have fault codes for the transmission.

This is probably the best option anyway, if you get a quality rebuild job with the 1995+ upgrades it will definitely last as long as you don't beat the S#!% out of it

First thing to do is check the codes, electronics, (ECU, PSOM, VSS) wiring, & plugs.

Nothing like rebuilding a trans & it does exactly what it did before.

I know.

Zf5

So i decided to go with a zf5 swap i have the zf5, Crossmember, pedals, and everything between the trans and engine incliding master and slave cylinder. I just have a couple of questions to clear up that i cant find. Will i need a body lift and do i really need to find a different ecm. I just heard it will idle 50 rpm higher. Oh and do i need to replace the plate thats behind the flywheel with a manual trans one.

I just finished up my E4OD to M5OD.

In my case I had to use the dust cover from the manual transmission. The automatic one is two pieces and the smaller piece wouldn’t bolt to the transmission. I image to could modify the automatic cover and make it work if you had to.

Not sure about the ZF tho.

So just to confirm for everybody. My truck is a 96 f250 over 8600 pounds so its not obd2. To do the zf5 swap on my 351w with the e4od i had to get the wire harness off a 93 zf5 truck same as the cross member and i bought new clutch master and slave cylinder and flywheel. Its all in and the truck runs fine it idles a tad but higher without changing the ecm. Did need to get a different driveshaft and the plate behind the flywheel worked. Just incase anybody was wondering. And i have to get a different starter.
