GTP38R

Hello everyone, my name is Felix,
I own a 2000 Ford f250 7.3 powerstroke diesel. She is a crew cab short bed. For the time being she is 2wd will be doing 4wd shortly. I have some questions, just until recently she was pretty much stock. She had a GTP38, oil crossover, boost fooler "for stock GTP38 i think not sure if it makes a difference between stock turbo or aftermarket turbos", hydra tuner with stock tunes, stock injectors, intake heater delete, 4in downpipe/exhaust "diamond eye" on to a 8in axle dump. She has 2016 front end conversion and bed. I just installed a rebuilt GTP38R with the KC turbo rebuild chra. But the exhaust housing has the wastegate welded shut. My question should I buy a new exhaust housing or is it okay to run it like that? I have heard that I shouldn't have any surge yet im getting lots of it same with some black smoke. I also heard that this turbo should be obnoxiously yet atleast to me it seems fairly quiet. Also I'm only getting about 20psi of boost to the map sensor even with the boost fooler. Is it because the boost fooler that i have only worked with the stock GTP38? Do i have to get a different one or do I have to/can I just adjust this one? Any feedback would be great. Also if you want to follow my page on Facebook/Instagram/YouTube its 7.3bros

You're fine running it that way. Overboosting is not generally a problem with GTP38R turbos on these engines.

Are you sure you are getting surge? Make a recording of the noise. What air filter are you running and when was it last cleaned?

You want the MAP sensor to see less than 24psi because that's when the PCM defuels. Does the truck not have a separate boost gauge?

I'm running a cheap Upower air filter from Amazon with a 4in boot. And the noise its making is a cha cha cha cha noise when letting of the throttle. It does when im flooring the peddle and let off or if im doing a little burn out. Also is that boost fooler okay? Again I got it when I had the stock 38 not sure if it needs to be replaced or reconfigure of some sorts. I'm also not getting much turbo noise from what others have said I'm supposed to be getting obnoxious turbo sounds

You don't need a different boost fooler when changing turbos. You can only read up to 24psi with the MAP sensor and 20 sounds about right with the boost fooler installed (it tricks the MAP sensor). You will need an aftermarket boost gauge if you want to see actual boost pressure.

The cha cha cha noise when letting off after wide open throttle isn't surge. This is normal in my opinion. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Surge should show itself around 15psi under partial throttle, at least that was my experience. But the 38R should prevent surge.

The stock 7.3 superduty airbox is notorious for leaking and not filtering well. If you want more noise you can do a 6637 filter mod. Pretty simple to do with a piece of 4" pipe, 6637 filter and a good quality size 4.13 clamp. Google it or check our Riffraff diesel for kits.

With the stock turbo i was getting about 25-28 pounds i understand that it was probably not all good air flow "I was probably getting hot air mixed in there as well" I would have thought I would atleast get the same number with a bigger turbo? Should I change the factory tunes that come with the hydra tuner? And thanks i will check out that mod

I’d start with checking for uppipe leaks and do a boost leak check.

The tunes in the PHP library that comes with the Hydra should work.

Here’s an example of a boost leak check. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ctor-pics.html

For the uppipes you want to check for soot near the turbo. Here’s a link to an old thread that has a photo of an uppipe leak.https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...pe-leak-2.html

Ive ran cheap bellowed uppipes from Amazon and eBay with good luck. The bellowed style prevents the leak that is common around the doughnut gaskets.

Both of the above threads were found using the search bar at the top of the page. I checked the google button and typed “7.3 boost check“ for example.

No problem. I’m no expert but hopefully headed you down the right direction. Just some simple things to look into first.

At least now you have some homework. lol

And don’t take my mention of the search bar wrong. Just trying to help you navigate the forum. There’s a wealth of knowledge there if you know how to dig through it (I’m still learning that part). Check out the Tech folder in the sticky section. Tons of good links in there. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-7-3l-psd.html

Just to clean up some terminology, the exhaust housing contains the exhaust back pressure valve, aka EBPV. That can be welded open if it is not used. It will flow pretty good that way but a EBPV delete high flow out will flow better. Not a big factor imo, I'd run it as-is until other issues are sorted. The wastegate is mounted on the turbo, you can see the solenoid that operates it right on top.

How are you reading boost pressure? Do you have an EGT gauge?

There are also a lot of good resources here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-7-3l-psd.html

@7.3 Bros , you can help us to help you by giving us a detalied list of the equipment on your truck. You can see examples of this in the signatures of @RacinJasonWV , @aawlberninf350 and myself.

As for turbo noise, this is what mine sounds like with a GTP38R FWIW.

Something I forgot to mention. If you do a boost leak check be sure to connect in a way that will not pressurize the CCV (crank case vent). You will want to connect to the rubber boot on the turbo side of the plastic tube which has the CCV port. Or to the turbo itself.

Fordtrucknoob is right. More information about your setup and specific condition will help FTE users better assist you.

Noob, Im still not sure if it’s possible to see user signatures when viewing on my phone. They don’t show up on my phone but I know they’re there. I can see them when on the PC.

@7.3 Bros wondering if you have figured anything out yet?

Sorry if my comments sounded short the other day. I didn’t have much time but was trying to help out quickly. Hopefully it didn’t come across as rude. The tone should have sounded “rushed”. Lol
