Overboost

What would cause an overboost condition on a stock motor?

The engineers were concerned with this, otherwise why would they put the sensors in, and have the programming cut the fuel out.

a) What is the maximum safe boost level of a stock 7.3?

b) What is the potential maximum boost level that a stock 7.3 turbo is capiable of?

What is the likelyhood of the answer to b) passing the answer to a) above?

Add in a Jody 120hp Tune to the equation and a boost-fooler.
Do you end up with a disaster?

Long story short: The stock turbo and it's journal bearing design will only handle a certain amount of boost before it starts leaking oil and trashing it's bearings. So they limit the boost with a wastegated design or a big exhaust housing.
Stock system is rated for 25psi max. but people have pushed them to 30psi for short durations including myself.

Can the Jody 120hp tune, push the boost to 30 psi on an otherwise stock engine system?

Not unless u modify the turbo to keep the wastegate shut and a boost regulator in the MAP line.

So if you put a regulator in will the wastegate still open at the 30psi to protect the turbo, or would the tune not give the motor that much pressure for an extended period causing damage?

the bad thing is that the wastegate begins to open at around 5 psi of boost. some make that higher by tightening the end of the rod, it puts more spring preload on the piston inside the canister and makes the red line send more pressure to the canister before it opens. with the wastegate still enabled, it will only push about 25-30 psi because it will dump the drive pressure out TO a certain point.

the regulator will not limit turbo boost pressure, because it only fools the computer into seeing 22psi. actually it does the opposite of what a wastegate does. it limits air pressure to the sensor (not the engine) so it actually keeps feeding more fuel instead of limiting the fuel.

I understand what the MAP regulator does, but will it cause any problems with the turbo or engine, ie too much boost, leaking oil, trashing bearings????
