rear end noise
It makes a "ticking" noise sometimes. Happens when coasting or when under load. It's definitely more of a tick as opposed to a clunk, hahaha. It occurs at regular intervals, when it happens. Not related to turning etc. I put gear oil in after I bought it and it was about a quart low, there seems to be a leak at the pinion. There is a very very slight bit of play at the pinion when I push a side load on the drive shaft. I think I'm going to looking for a new third member unless someone has an easier fix. Does the forum agree? I'm going to start calling junkyards tomorrow.
How complicated is it to swap" Reading the forums it looks like loosening the ales and pulling them out some, removing the third member and replacing (with new gasket of course). Put axles back in and bolt down. Am I missing anything obvious?
Have you checked your u-joints--really checked with the drive shaft removed from at least the differential?
If you do pull the differential, you should clean out the housing. Especially if you find any visible damage. Old grindings will turn your new bearings into a howler in no time.
Is the ticking at wheel speed or driveshaft speed?
There is definitely a leak at the pinion and more play than my other truck (same rearend).
I know junkyard parts are questionable, where's a good source for a stock replacement? Don't think I have the skill set to attempt a rebuild. I definitely don't have the tools.
No, I haven't pulled the driveshaft yet.
Pinion yoke still has side to side play and leak. Anybody know a good source for a used one? I'm striking out at the junkyards. If I have to get a rebuilt online, who is a good source? Looking for less expensive and reliable quality.
axle code is:
WDM CN 9CA
3-50 9 361A
My research says this is a 31 spline 3.5 ratio axle
Thanks!
p.s. have not pulled drive shaft yet, but very obviously has play in the pinion.
