Rear end noise
My 2004 F-150 4x4 starting making a howling noise in the rear end. It started suddenly. This noise occors at all speeds but especially at low speeds and mid range speeds. ( 0-55) I recently had the rear flange replaced and the mechanic said it came off too easy. He said he usually has to beat them off and it came off in his hands. I called him and he said I probably will have to replace the ring and pinion which is very expensive. The truck seems to have no issues with any other noises etc or bumping etc. I've had the truck since new and it has 130,000 miles. I've always maintained the truck and had it serviced reguarly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Sounds like he moved the pinion gear so now it's not meshing properly and causing the whine. Axle noise is normally caused by the gears not meshing properly. I would have him check the pattern on the mesh and have him shim accordingly before changing the gears. I would be more concerned as to what he meant by the flange came off too easy..
