3rd Gear Problems 4r100
bought a 1999 f250 super duty v10 gas with a busted transmission, before we rebuilt it had no reverse or high gears just first. After rebuilding the main shaft (we didn’t replace valve body or solenoid pack because we were on a budget) and installing a shifter kit we have flawless reverse, first and second but second runs high only shifting to third sometimes around 3,000-3,500 and once in the ride becomes a lot more stutter full. If you let off the gas around 2,250+ it sometimes shifts up but still sometimes has a stutter.
Don’t know exactly what the problem is but the fact that it doesn’t shift by itself around 2,500 makes me think a valve may be sticking or something to that degree.
Side note: I believe third and reverse are both on the same clutch pack with the 4r100, so is there any reason that reverse works fine but third is so rocky?
Anyways, any help or ideas are much appreciated.
Both reverse and third/fourth gears use the direct clutch. The clutch is applied by the 2-3 shift valve for the 2-3 shift and just stays on during the 3-4 shift. In reverse, it is applied without using the 2-3 shift valve.
But I also saw people saying it could be a bad shift 1 solenoid and was curious if a high end code reader would pick something like that up or not? I'm a college freshman so I'm not trying to spend money where its not needed and those solenoid packs run around $300 last I checked.
And a side note about the sticky 2-3 valve, would it be fine to take the valve body out and just de-burr that valve and try again? or would you recommended just replacing it?
I found this all in one valve body/ solenoid pack kit online but its only $200 which makes me think its either the wrong thing or a scam:

Let me know what you think, and thanks again for the reply!
You should get a high end scan tool. About the best one out there is FREE! Go to forscan.org and get the free download. You'll also need an ELM327 OBDII adapter. I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30.
Before replacing the valve body I do recommend removing it and seeing if you can free up the shift valve, assuming it is stuck.
#11 is the 2-3 shift valve.
the 2-3 shift valve will stick and stay stuck,,,if you try and clean it and reinstall the valve body,,it will shift once and then stick open,,you can not clean it,,the valve bore wears,,,I really don't think this is your problem though..
most likely a problem with the 2-3 accumulator valve or spring.
the solenoid packs never fail,,,don't waste your money,,,I reuse everyone and have rebuilt hundreds of 4r100's
but first pull codes and monitor the gear command,it will tell you everything
