Oil

2002 F350 7.3. 26K miles. Been using Kendall Super D 3 15W40 since new. No longer available. Phillips gave me a part number that they say "should work" I know oil companies have removed zinc and other vital lubricants. what can i run in my truck now that is as good or better than Kendall? oil change coming up shortly. info greatly appreciated

My personal preference is Schaeffer 9000 full synthetic. I'm sure others will be along to give you theirs.

Our 7.3 engines require oil that meets Ford specification WSS-M2C171-F1 lots of good choices out there.
soo. Did you leave out a 0 on the mileage?
I’ve run Rotella T6 the most. Main reason for me is cost and availability. Now that they have a 15 W action I’m sure going to change to that as I have moved south. Unfortunately I have enough 5W to last probably two more years.

thanks for the info. did not leave out a Zero. Truck is used for at the most 3 weeks a year to in the past tow a camping trailer and now haul a camper. has been garaged or covered since new and still looks new inside and out.

I was using Lubrication Enginnering but do to the cost of shipping I have been using rotella T4 15-40 in all my powerstrokes. Not a single issue or complaint. I will continue to use it.

26K... wow...

I have been using Rotella T6 5w40 for almost 7 years, but am on my last stock of T6. I was going to switch to LE8700 after talking to CJFarm and a couple of others, but decided it was not right for me.

I am interested in trying Rotella T6 15w40, but since it is a new formula, it is pricey...

I think I will mail order some Rotella T4 15w40 with a coupon code and free shipping from a parts store and give that a shot. I live in north GA, so the viscosity is not a concern for me. We do travel cross country to the NW of the country every couple of years. Although, if we going during winter we take the Subaru instead of the 7.3L.

I’ve run T4 and other 15w40 diesel oils that meet the ford spec since I bought my truck in 2003.

I’ve also been burning straight vegetable oil in a custom 2-tank conversion since 2006 - 270k miles on the high cholesterol fuel so far.

Because of my ‘atlernative fuel’ choice and I was terrified of screwing up my truck, I did a lot of used oil analysis and had some intense conversations with the UOA lab engineers.

My take away is that no oil does a ‘better’ job of protecting the engine than a quality conventional oil that meets the ford specs. The synthetic oils just protect the engine longer. Opinions on this vary depending on how the koolaid that manufacturers put out affected people. Snake oils have been around almost as long as prostitution...

Since the contamination from my ‘alternative fuel’ is not what diesel oil is designed to handle, I was never interested in extended OCI’s. For my 7.3’s, 5000 mile OCI always yielded excellent UOA’s and at 5000 miles there was no difference in ‘wear’ with popular synthetic options like T6.

Anyone willing to debate this without UOA experience is wasting their time with me. Quoting your sales brochure is not a convincing argument....

Well guys I know many will laugh...but I have used Super Tech 15-W40 for years and years now...Not one bit of problems with it. That so called "cheap oil" meets all of Ford's Motor Oil Specs and in my opinion and many others is that it is superior to Ford, Rotella, Delo, and others, except maybe rich man's oil Amsoil. Made by Warren Petroleum without all the hype and fancy packaging and is half the price of others. To each his/her own! Also, just to add some more info...I removed the dual mass flywheel junk Ford came out with to tamp down engine spikes with a good quality LUK clutch and throw out bearing with a zf-6 behind that and only used straight mineral oil in the tranny. For over seven years I dragged a 36ft. 5th Wheel behind that set up all over the Pacific Northwest mountain passes as well as back east and never had any problems. Just saying.

I use Tractor Supply 15w40, Zinc content was over 1500 ppm last time I had it tested, anything above 1200 ppm is good.

@00t444e , did anything ever come out of your abnormal UOA from several months back?

That Tractor Supply Oil sounds interesting. There is one just down the road from me. I think I might just check it out and see what it costs.

BTW...What is the benefit of Zinc Content?

Its normally $9 a gallon but they had their 2.5 gallon jugs on sale for $18 so I got 4 or 5 of them last time I was there. I use that same oil in all my 4 stroke engines diesel or gas. Zinc is an anti wear ingredient in oil that helps it build up a film to prevent metal to metal contact.

Truck still runs great other than a rough cold start sometimes but I think that's due to my bigger injectors. I have put a few thousand miles on it since then and I also installed a KC turbo and new HPO lines with a crossover so I am going to wait until the oil change after this one to send in another sample.

As you can tell, there are several options available. See what is easy for you to purchase based on your location. Man, 26k Miles. I can only imagine.
