Read this Sous and 00t444e and everyone from Turbo Diesel Register https://www.turbodieselregister.com/...eoilspecs.html. Maybe some good info here especially if you are thinking Rotella Synthetic vs. Non Synthetic.
Truck still runs great other than a rough cold start sometimes but I think that's due to my bigger injectors. I have put a few thousand miles on it since then and I also installed a KC turbo and new HPO lines with a crossover so I am going to wait until the oil change after this one to send in another sample.
Sounds good and please keep us posted. I remember the numbers being abnormal was somewhat of a mystery to everyone.
Also, just so we are clear, the TSC brand oil is Travelers right?
Well guys I know many will laugh...but I have used Super Tech 15-W40 for years and years now...Not one bit of problems with it. That so called "cheap oil" meets all of Ford's Motor Oil Specs and in my opinion and many others is that it is superior to Ford, Rotella, Delo, and others, except maybe rich man's oil Amsoil. Made by Warren Petroleum without all the hype and fancy packaging and is half the price of others. To each his/her own! Also, just to add some more info...I removed the dual mass flywheel junk Ford came out with to tamp down engine spikes with a good quality LUK clutch and throw out bearing with a zf-6 behind that and only used straight mineral oil in the tranny. For over seven years I dragged a 36ft. 5th Wheel behind that set up all over the Pacific Northwest mountain passes as well as back east and never had any problems. Just saying.
Yep, I also kinda assume that the best oil is one that meets Ford's specs. Sure enough, Wally Oil meets their specs. My last change was with Wally Oil.

You guys have gotten my attention here. I just priced out that oil, I've been using Ford's motorcraft, it's $19 for 5 quarts. Super tech is about 10.50.. I'm liking the idea of a 45-dollar oil change instead of a $70 oil change.. really? No problems?? How long have you been running it for??

Sorry but it's a little early for a full review. I've had it in my truck for less than 6 months. However, I've been using Super Tech in my other cars now for many, many years with no oil related issues.
2002 F350 7.3. 26K miles. Been using Kendall Super D 3 15W40 since new. No longer available. Phillips gave me a part number that they say "should work" I know oil companies have removed zinc and other vital lubricants. what can i run in my truck now that is as good or better than Kendall?
The same oil manufacturer that made Kendall oil also makes Motorcraft oil, and that is Phillips.

All right, look forward to a full review. I dove in a little bit further based on the Ford approved oil spec that somebody posted up there, and I don't see that super tech has that. I found a list online of all 15W40 oils that have the spec that they recommend... But, since I'm not an engineer and I don't even know what that spec is, it probably doesn't matter. Super tech will probably be more than fine. But I'd love to know. But I don't want to put it in my beloved 7.3 until I know

I am not an engineer either, but the spec I looked for on Super tech was oil meeting FORD spec WSS-M2C171-F1. I'm not out in the garage now and it's late, but that's what I remember and wrote down when I switched.

Yeah that's the spec. I can't wait to go to Walmart sometime today. So I can read the label. All I'm seeing was super tech is something in regards to cj-4. Quite interesting as I tried to find certain information, and I come across the calcium, viscosity, phosphate, and zinc also a few other things. Makes me wonder when they take those tests, is that after about 200 hours of use.? I don't know, just interesting. Because I think that's the other issue with oil is, yeah maybe it meets the specs right out of the refinery. But, compare it to others, does it break down quicker.? I get very little use out of my truck. Maybe a super tech would be just fine. I don't know, I'm going to take a picture of the label when I go to Walmart today.
Without seeing what you fellas are describing, I can say that the formula for oil sometimes changes and Ford sometimes updates their WSS listing. I believe the latest update was in January, but I haven't checked in a while.
The API SN rating inside the donut stamp is something to avoid if possible. This rating has a lower volume of ZDDP. Which, in itself is not indicative of a "bad oil" to use, but definitely something to be aware of for long term use.

Just checked my Super Tech container and it says it meets FORD spec WSS-M2C171-F1
I think this 26K mile requires some pictures to be uploaded, Would love to see what a 26K 18 year old 7.3 Looks like....
I think some forms have to be signed attesting to truly being 18 years of age before pictures can be shared and we can all stay legal.
Once fully adult though @ 21 the oil leaks just keep on coming at ya. Was kicking that around today with a friend who runs a 7.3 and still has a local mechanic who specializes in these; I am 1000 miles away now. Said mechanic has 2 of these trucks, one strictly stock and one heavily modded.
But just today I heard this mechanic’s take on oil choice in these, one I have never heard before: “My guy steered me back to Rotella and oil treatments said the synthetic will make them 7.3s leak.”
I usually read oil discussions (you should see ‘em on a chainsaw site) as a debate between cost vs. longevity - ROI, etc. Have never considered that the conventional/synthetic choice would have an impact on seals, etc. longevity.
