Hooray!

I had some of that "soup" on my valve covers after the first start when I replaced my injectors and cups. I changed the oil at about 100 miles and cleaned off the valve covers. I ended up hot-torquing another 1000 miles down the road and there was no more soup on the VCs.

Well send it back quick! I called Clay yesterday to rent their tool and they were all out. I have the stainless cups in hand, and they are NICE. I don't see them failing if they're installed with his special tool.

He told me he has 52 sets of tools out on rental right now, and everyone seems to be taking their sweet time sending them back. My speculation is the slow returns might be because the politicians are getting away with telling everyone they HAVE to stay home and quarantine, so folks don't feel a need to hurry with their projects.

Oh, and I purchased this set...so I won't be sending it back. He said he has plans to build more, but that is on hold for now.

I figured you rented a set of tools. My bad. 52 pairs lent out is insane though. I'm sick of this quarantine, its slowing everything down.

Think of those tools as injector cup dispensers....and related items.

I replaced the cups today. I have some photos to share. Would be nice to get some more opinions as to what went wrong here so I can continue to learn from this guy's mistakes as much as possible.

All 8. Notice how #7 all the way to the left is bulging at the bottom of the cup. The 4th from the right is also bulging. When you look inside the cup, you can see where the copper washer was only sealing at the very outer edges of the washer because of the concave shape of the cup where the injector nozzle passes through.

Better angle on the rounded bottom of the cup. No good at all...

I am questioning whether there was ANY sealant applied to the very bottom of these cups. I found no evidence of any, and only a little at the tops of the cups.

A sample of the bores condition after running for only a month with bad cup seals.

Another with lots of carbon built op down there below the coolant passage. Very hard to clean out.

This was my go to on all bores except #7. Had to do that one by hand.

Stainless cups sure blend in well.

Cleaned up bore ready for the cup.

And another ready.
I spent about 11 hours correcting the mistakes made on this cup job. The truck is sitting overnight and most of tomorrow to get a full 24 hours on the sealant cure. I'll pull the compression numbers when cure is complete.

Wow. I think the previous "mechanic" installed the old cups by sticking a dowel down each one and pounding it in.

My knee jerk reaction to combustion gasses I’m the cooling system is cavitation induced holes in the cylinder walls.

Any idea what the symptoms were for the original cup job?

I don't know the original symptoms/problems for the original cup job. That was a previous owner who, after getting the rest of the story yesterday, seems to have parted ways with the truck soon after the cup job was done. I'll ask the current owner if he knows. This guy I am working for now bought the truck end of last year, and 2 weeks later it had the current issue of all 8 cups failing and blowing the hoses off the degas bottle. The engine looks clean top and bottom. Turbo very lightly dusted on the edges of the compressor wheel. When I cranked it over before taking it apart, there were no skips in the cranking (but compression was slightly compromised from the cup failures). I'll have compression numbers this evening.

Like to see those number as well. Maybe the heads were rebuilt and hot tanked with the cups still in. That or they just didn't know what to use.

Well, compression numbers weren't great.
2 - 350
4 - 325
6 - 230
8 - 340
1 - 320
3 - 360
5 - 310
7 - 290

Owner is talking about a leak down test to determine the issues on 6 & 7....but they are all kinda low for a 255k truck. It has a tuner on it...pretty hot tune judging from the test drive after work was complete. It does run strong with DP F6 that is plugged into it.

Coolant is staying in the degas bottle now. Owner is happy to be driving it again.
