Hey guys I'm looking to put dash cameras in my vehicles. Anyone here have good/bad experiences? Or recommend some? Obviously something that would be compatible with the 7.3 platform. I don't care to video tape myself. Looking to keep simple and affordable and would like front and rear view recording. Very much appreciated.
I installed a KDLinks x1 years ago and it is still going strong and works well today. I had to install a timed relay though because when I would turn the ignition to on and let the glow plugs fire up and then turn the ignition to start, the power was cutoff to the camera and it would be in shutdown mode when the ignition went back to on.
A simple 60 second timed relay fixed that issue. I see that the x1 is no longer available and rightly so because it was years ago. I have it for those ******s that like to cut off campers or in case someone decides to brake check me when they are having a bad day. A side benefit is that when camping we can use the footage of arriving to the site in a video if we wanted. I had intentions of installing a camera in my Subaru as well, but never got around to it, maybe that time has come. I bought a 128GB microSD card for it and set the video to loop so it never "fills up". It records something like 100 hours of video.
Tugly did a thread a while back about this topic...
Are there any multi-camera DVR’s for vehicles? Like home security systems?
Do you mean like 4 or more channels? Yes. They're all commercial for semis and other commercial vehicles. They all cost at least several thousand, the cameras do not have great resolution and the functionality is very limited compared to high-end consumer models (i.e. parking mode, saving to the cloud, etc etc). Technology changes quickly in the dashcam market though so I'm sure we'll see one in several years' time.
In the meantime, some guys on that forum I mentioned above run their own version which is either a combination of 4 single-camera systems, 1 2-channel and 2 single-channel systems or 2 2-channel systems. They have a lot of time on their hands to sync footage from separate systems it seems.

My attention span is barely long enough to read what you just wrote. Certainly no time for research and building custom set ups.
Just thinking my knockoff Android head unit easily has the computing power to do what I want. Maybe they’ll provide multiple camera/audio inputs on these in the future and apps to run them??
I'd also like to have a camera on the back of my fifth wheel. I got hit by a 18 wheeler this last year and would love to have a picture of him sleeping! WiFi would be great to so you can retrieve it on you cell. I'm going to have to have something before we leave this next time. Don't ever want to go threw that again.

That's a good option since you have the head unit already. The downside is that none of the cameras made for it seem to do better than 1080p.
