injector pictures - issues?

I just removed and reinstalled the passenger side head on my 95 powerstroke due to a broken glow plug. Whatever - it is done now and almost ready to go.
I am putting new orings on the injectors on that head and thought I would throw up a couple pics of the injectors. some of them have some discoloration and some of the orings were in very bad shape.
So take a look at these pics and if you know about these things let me know what you think. is that discoloration a problem (injector cups? ) or just due to fading orings?

and where EXACTLY does the fuel come out? at the base of the carboned up tip (around the copper gasket) or at the tip of the .....tip?

the discoloration is fine thats just due to linking copper ring or oring u can clean all that with steel wool but u want the finest u can find and be gentle on them and MAKE ABSULATE SURE THAT NO WOOL SHAVINGS GET INTO THE INJECTOR I MEAN IT !!! also u need to clean your tips with the wool too they got crud on em pretty good like mine did that crap will cover the tiny holes on the tips and mess your spray patterns up! just so u know i did this on mine and my buddies have too with no harm done

So there are tiny holes in the injector tip? I looked and couldn't see anything. I guess they definitely need to be cleaned. Thanks for the advice

I got the oring kits form International and in the instructions it states that if the steel rings aren't damaged to just leave the originals on. Mine look ok so I just left them rather than risk scratching the injector body removing them and putting the new ones on. I don't think they actually seal anything either, they just provide support for the highest oring.

x2 on what forrider said. It may be a little more $ but BUY THE REAL STEEL WOOL. They sell the stuff thats similiar but made of other stuff, idk what, but it scores and scratches metal no matter how lightly you use it and comes apart easily. Just a warning

they may still be good but i always replace em anyways so that one ring on each one of those injectors dont cause me a problem cuz i know i dont want to take em out just for that one ring being a problem also think about it.... everytime they are taken out it requires time, plus alot of cranking when its done sometimes they will be so hard to start that u think something else went wrong ive seen it a good 5 or 6 times now

Thanks, I will change them out then - what you say makes sense.

Regarding the lots of cranking, I have read about that. I should be ready to fire it up tomm and could you just confirm the procedure for me?

As I understand it I should leave the glow plugs out and the injectors unplugged while I crank to get fuel and oil to the injectors. How will I know when the fuel and oil rails are full?

yep first things first leave gp out crank it over to get any oil and fuel out so it dont hydro lock on ya second make sure after the gp are back in u fill the hpop resevoir up to the top as well as the fuel bowl it makes life easier also i would say crank it over for about 15-20 seconds each time then let the starter cool for bout 5 min after u do that go ahead and hook the wires back up to everything and it should start i normally just take the fuse out instead of unhooking the wires

oh yeah i almost forgot once the oil rails are full and building pressure your injector oil spouts should start having some oil come out but if u have the wires or fuse out they wont spit because they arent firing

Just a thought, when you crank it the first time to get the crap out when the GPs are out, you may want to just set the valve covers back on to keep crap from blowing all over your engine bay. Would that help forrider you think? With the cleanup anyways

lmao yea that would deff help brother i never put the vc on when i do the cranking though i just set 2 big garbage bags over it because my valve covers always slip to one side enough to let oil fly out and i dont like just putting 1 or 2 bolts in when i gotta take the vc back off put the gp in then bolt em back down i always wait till after i get the truck running b4 putting the vc back on anyways but however suits ya best go for it
