I'm happy with my Hella bulbs in my F350 that Jason turned me to and have a set on the shelf ready to go into the X once the harness comes in, but when they need replaced, I look forward to reconsidering this brand of drop-in LEDs (or even lasers at that time ) and reading all the reviews that will surely spawn now going forward thanks to your well-constructed defense here. Well done!
Your Welcome CousinCarl. I looked into the Lazers after WhiteyFords post and I too have some home work to do. From what I can tell on the Lazers bulbs, they would require a different headlamp bucket to function properly. But it's also still in it's infancy stage at this point, so it'll be interesting to see how they progress..

This...

At this time the laser head lights are not something that I would be comfortable in retro-fiting to my truck or any of my other vehicles. From what I saw they generate quite a bit of heat behind the housing as well, so cooling would be a major consideration. Maybe in a few years when the technology is more refined and perfected for the aftermarket scene I will look into it again for my vehicles. Until then, I will run the relay harness with Hella 100/80 bulbs thanks to Jason for throwing them in when we had the north GA Meet & Greet and we did some work on my rear driveshaft.

Pretty cool advancement in headlights though if you ask me and they look promising.

Sous, IIRC you had a write up years ago using some cheap brand 100/80 bulbs and a cheap harness from fleabay. I think I remember such a thread. Am I dreaming? Curious if you retained the same harness when switching to the hella bulbs or went with the rally harness this time?

The harness was from an American private seller on eBay. It was not as expensive as the ones linked above at just under $80-ish from what I remember and wrote about in the link above.

The cheap Abl 100/80 bulbs were not good after a short period of use. They were better than the OEM, but I didn't like them after running them for a while. I rarely drive my truck in hours of darkness, but sometimes it is unavoidable.

I installed Phillips Xtreme bulbs and was happy with them for years.

Recently when Jason and I were replacing the rear driveshaft U-joints he gave me a pair of the Hella 100/80 bulbs. I installed them and they appear to be a good choice, but I have not had the truck out during hours of darkness yet. I have only turned them on from the trucks parking spot at the treeline at the edge of our property to make sure they work and that was in the early evening when the sun was still very much up.

I still have the Phillips bulbs in case I prefer them and as a backup, but trust Jason and his judgment, so I will run the Hella for the time being.

My thread which has been mentioned...

Sous, did you also run the harness and relay's or just plug and play for now? Also what was it you had to order when you did the u joints on the drive shaft. Going to do mine and want all the parts. Mine is a little different cause it's a crewcab 4x4. Thank you,
Chet

Absolutely! I will share my mistake and success stories just the same. I will not lead people astray from what I have experienced or learned first hand if that is the information they seek. Of course, my opinion and thoughts on my experiences may not always be what someone wants to hear, but I will always will be honest when sharing my thoughts on a subject. I am wrong just about everyday of my life though in one way or another, so there is always that to consider. Today I mounted an electrical box too far to the left and had to move it, so far that was the only wrong thing I have done today...

Chet, I did and still do run the relay harness. That was a great upgrade in my opinion as it gave the headlights a clean and clear path to the batteries instead of the OEM wiring.

Also, in an effort to not hijack this thread, I have posted your question about U-joints and my response in the link below...

LED/HID has to be done right, which means more money than 99% of people are willing to spend. Bang for the buck a high performance halogen setup is the winner still.

I wonder what the voltage drop through the stock wiring is with a standard 55 or 60 watt bulb.

Up to 2 volt drop between batts and bulbs.

Relay harness makes ANY bulbs brighter.

There is miles of stock, skinny wiring.

What / where is the wiring that triggers the headlights on and off? I’ve got a relay harness that is not plug and play that I need to adapt.

EDIT: Will be following this tutorial posted by FTE member:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...ghter-brights/

My harness was hacked by PO and connectors were not OEM, so I’ve had too back track a bit.

When I made my relay harness I used the stock headlight wires right by the lights to trigger the the relays

I would look for ceramic pigtails for the headlights. The plastic junk at autoparts store sucks.

I did the same as Wesley and mounted the two relays near the windshield washer fluid fill port. The driver side headlight OEM socket is just sitting on top of the ABS cover.
