Well, being that I am stuck inside for who knows how long, I decided to try to change out my windshield gasket. What a bear of a job. After 2 days of trying to get the seal and trim on, I finally got it all taped up and ready to go (I had to sit the seal in hot water for awhile to get it to shrink enough it was about an inch too long on every side and wouldn't stay put).
Now, where I am stuck is trying to get the dang thing in. I am one man-ing this which makes it more difficult.
Am I supposed to try to get the top in first? The trouble I'm having is I can get the top lip over the pinch weld, but it needs to come up about another inch and the bottom needs to come in about an inch. I've got suction cups to pull from the inside, but so far I can't get it to budge up or down.
Yep lots of fun huh. I did mine myself and had to regroup with some advice from the forum after the first attempt. I started it on the bottom first as gravity is on your side. I protected the hood (not that there is much to protect on my truck) and climbed up on it and with 2 dual suction cups it was much easier to man-handle and get it forced all the way down on the lower pinch weld most of the way across. Really have to work it down moving slightly left and right. Lube the hell out it and be sure mark a center-line to get it right on dead center before starting to pull the string otherwise you'll be screwed when you go to do the ends. You'll need plastic trim tools to help work the seal lip inside in addition to the rope. The top corners were the most difficult. at one point it seemed like it wasn't going to go but it finally did.
Tips: I wouldn’t try it without a helper. Even an inexperienced one to push from the outside. Lube generously with liquid soap or goop hand cleaner works well.
I spent a couple days working on mine. I finally took it to a glass shop for them to spend several hours doing it. I think they charged me $75 to install it. Best $75 I spent on my truck.
