Hope someone knows. After a long delay I am finally back to my engine. Put cam bearings and cam in today. Manual shows a spacer behind the cam timing gear. If one was there it is lost. Anybody know how thick, etc? Book says beveled side toward bearing journal.
That is the thrust washer. That is what controls the amount of end play in the cam. The beveled side goes toward the cam face. The washer should be a few thousands thicker then the cam retaining plate. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same one as used on Y blocks..
The beveled edge is on the ID of the washer. This is there to clear the small radius on the snout of the cam where it meets the cam face. You install the beveled edge toward the cam, flat side is cam gear side.
Thanks again. Thought I was organized for once. Every part I removed I put in ziplocks and labeled. May have dropped the spacer when removing gear set. Had to replace garage door tracks and moved all the parts I had laid out on tables to the back of garage. Will keep looking.

Just a thought! I don't think the washer will come off unless you removed the timing gear key, Are you sure it isn't still on the cam?

You're my new best friend It was on the old cam. Manual is wrong. Shows it between thrust plate and gear. I was scratching my balding head trying to figure out what the bevel would do out there. Love this forum. Apologies to Ford. Manual not wrong, reader too literal. Spacer fits inside thrust plate before key instslled.

Happy days! I guess at my age I'm lucky to remember such things.
