I was measuring the front cam bearing and found it is set back almost twice the recommended distance. at near .042 and not quite square. The machinist did try the cam in the block and gave it the go ahead. The book says .005 - .020 is needed for cam sprocket/thrustplate lubrication..
However is there a serious issue with the cam bearing being this far back ?TIA
Did you check the oil passage alignment with the bearing insert?
You still have full bearing contact on the cam journal?
Did you check the cam for straightness in a lathe with dial indicator on all journals or support the end journals by V blocks and check for straightness before installing in the block? This should be done before installing to check for bearing alighment and freedom of the cam to rotate. Should be able to rotate cam with fingers with oil on the journals. Check cam and cam gear with thrust plate for end float and how much was it?
Anyone can assemble a motor without doing clearance checks, not my style.
The cam turns by fingers, smooth enough I'd say.. rechecked it myself.. no binding.. I'm just curious if the front gap is affecting pressure at all or just a favorable #. It would seem all is fine. He did a good job of lining up the oil holes "for a chevy guy" LOL He's 50 something doing this since highschool.. I'm a prepress guy with nearly same credits and still "F"up from time to time..
Unless the clearence is a major issue I'd love to proceed and not go down there with my book tossing #'s around .. He'd bitchslap me if I was crying wolf..but all I have is the #'s in the book and no explanation of the =&-'s over over tolerance..the under is a no brainer...
