I recently bought a '73 F250 and now I am going through everything and check it in detail. No major issues so far, but some things I would like to fix.
Its a 460 engine, with the dipstick located on the passenger side of the timing cover. But the dipstick does not really fit onto the tube. The upper edge of the tube seems to be flared and therefore the dipstick cover does not get over it and is loose and probably in a wrong position.
The dipstick itself looks original.
What do you recommend? Getting a new tube for the dipstick? Is this pressed in to the timing cover? How can I remove this?
Or just removing the "flared edge" with a grinder?
From the looks of things, that's the wrong dipstick and tube for your truck.

I ran outside and took a quick look at my 77 F-150 w/460 to refresh my memory. Your tube shouldn't be flared like that. Looks like someone forced something on it and gave it that lip. It should be nice and straight.
My dipstick matches what mike listed. ID number is D4TE-6750-AA.
Thank you , Doosenberry - I also thought, that somebody before hammered it in with too much force. I think, I will just take my Dremel and remove the flared lid.
How long is your dipstick?
From the tip of the dipstick to the bottom of that cup on the end of the handle is approximately 17". The total length of the dipstick from the tip to the end of the handle is approximately 23".

ID number D3TE-6750-AB is not listed in the 1973/79 100/500 or 600/900 truck catalog for any engine. This number isn't listed in the Master Cross Reference Catalogs either.
But, I have to wonder that since this ID number is for a 1973 truck and the 1973 460 dipstick has a 1974 part number (D4TZ-A replaced by D8TZ-A), what was the original 1973 460 part number?
The C8SZ-6754-A tube also fits 1968/73 429 & 1968/78 460 Passenger Cars. There is one on ebay.
