So it appears my water pump is dying. No leaks or overheating yet just God awful noise. Enough to make me worried that there was something wrong deeper in the engine. Do I wait for a Motorcraft pump or just go get one from NAPA? I know theres a significant price difference. And I also know these trucks like OEM parts. I only have to drive 2 miles to work so it's not the end of the world if it's just going to make noise for now.
I have used them all and they all last about the same! NAPA is close so it is more convenient. I also use a super thin line of high temp RTV. You will get a lot of opinions on brand.

Good luck!
right. Thank you. Hopefully it goes better than my last project. Haha.
Sometimes you need to get what you can when you can instead of what you want and waiting for it...
I did this with an AutoZone steering gear when my OEM exploded and I needed to get the truck back on the road and out of the campground in a couple of days. 6 months later I replaced that AZ gear with another AZ gear under warranty. Now the second AZ gear is leaking too and has movement in the output shaft.
I will be replacing the second AZ gear with a Blue Top or WTO gear soonish.
Sometimes the off the shelf parts store parts work out for us, sometimes they don't...
Right. The local places are more expensive than the international pump I found.i might evaluate it further tonight to see if i can wait. Who knows, might get confined to my house with how our state is shutting things down right now. I'd have plenty of time then.
What kind of noise and are you sure it's the water pump? The power steering pump is known to make a disconcerting rattling noise.
The PS pump made a little noise too. Its whined a lot since I bought the truck but when I spun the fan the water pump made more of the grating squeak that I heard. Freaked out thinking a rod bearing went out or a shaft snapped but decided that wasnt logical being I drove it 30 miles without issue.
I swapped out for the international water pump... It is a different configuration and requires some different radiator hoses etc... If you're looking for a quick fix, suggest you go with the stock version of the water pump.
This thread will walk you through the replacement with an International pump with a coolant filter. Here's my account of how it was done on my Excursion. Both threads are linked along with others in the PSD 7.3 Tech Folder.
In addition to what Unleashd has said, there are 4 different water pump replacement write-ups (both OEM and International) in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder under the header "General Engine & Engine Compartment".

I'm not an expert on this, but when my water pump failed I think it was due to a failed shaft bearing. It made a horrendous squeal, which was caused by the impeller rubbing on the block and actually wore a groove in the block after a few miles of driving. So, if that is what you are experiencing, you may want to get in there an check it. I'm always wondering if that groove is now a weak point as far as cavitation.
If you take the belt off, can you move the fan around a lot?
