Rear wiper misbehaving!

My rear wiper never seems to want to return back to it's proper parked position. Sometimes it stops at 12', sometimes at 9' but never back to wear it needs to really stay. When I fist go it the wiper arm was loose. I tightened the nut after thinking it was where it needed to be but after using it it ended up elsewhere. I thought maybe I didn't align right but it decides to park where it wants to. I can figure out the problem. There's power in the plugs where it needs to be and when it needs to be.
I stumped so here I am.

So when it's parked, and off, are you able to move the arm with moderate force? Check for stripped splines?

That's the one thing I haven't checked. I'll do that.

I checked the arm. It does not budge at all. There doesn't feel much give. I did notice it was now at about 9' -10'. It was at 12' the last time I drove it and I didn't use the rear wiper.

I've never taken the rear apart, but maybe it has sliding contacts like front ones do and they are dirty or worn, preventing it from finding home position.
Here is a random article with pics.

I may have to pull it apart to see what's going on. I was hoping someone else who has had this issue might respond. I didn't find anything specific about it when I tried a forum search but I only searched titles. Trying a whole post search just brings up too much unrelated stuff along with any possible hits. It's just too hard to sort it all out.
I have a feeling I now know why the wiper arm was loose in the first place. My dad probably got tired of the wiper parking in different places and just loosened the nut so it would stay in the same place and then never use it.

I have the same problem, but I can get it to return to rest position by quickly turning the wiper control a few times. That would be rotating the control up one and back again, not down as it tries to go 3 times by itself and does not return correctly. It is very annoying, but it still works for now. I have to take it out and see if it is serviceable or not. I have a 2002 EX 6.8L Limited.

I have read that it may be possible to open it up and clean it out. Oxidization on contacts is a possibility. I have tested my wiring and I get full power at the harness plug, so mine is for sure the motor.

I've tried turning the dial quickly a few times but it never returned to the same place twice. It may need a thorough cleaning as you suggest. I've had trouble with the wiper switch in 94 F150. That was an easy fix. The EX may not be as easy.

The park position switching happens in the motor, the contacts are probably corroded inside. You may be able to disassemble and clean. If that doesn't work the motor is the same as a Expedition so it's not rare or Excursion specific!

There is a good thread in this section on troubleshooting the rear wiper system, a quick search should turn it up. Somebody bumped it up recently so it should be on the first few pages...

Those are some good points. I'll see if I can find the thread.
Thanks.

No luck finding the thread. I'm getting too many hits with pages and pages of threads with wipers in them. Any good keywords to finding it?

I drove the EX yesterday and while driving I was playing with the switch and I finally got the wiper to park in it's usual place. It took a couple of quick turns to get it right. I'm getting to think the problem might be in the wiper stalk. For now I'm not going to mess with it.

At least you were able to get it back to rest position!

I think I may have a dreaded GEM issue to solve that may be higher in my list of priorities. Yes the resting wiper is good for now.

Here's a link to the rear wiper troubleshooting thread, don't remember it addressing GEM issues but maybe useful nonetheless...
