Dang Orings!

I have been after an oil leak for some time now. It started on a trip last summer. The engine was out last winter for a reseal and a few other things, one of which was a t4 kit. I put new seals and orings everywhere I worked, I believe all Ford parts from a reputable source.

At first I chastised myself for not doing a rear main seal while it was out. After digging around under the hood a few times I noticed the turbo drain line wasn't working well and leaked. I thought I had found the problem. After a few emails with the parts vendor I changed the installation on their recommendation. There was still and oil leak.

The truck was driven a small amount after that and parked for the winter. As I have a zf5 rebuilt and was sure the rear main must be the problem. I decided yesterday that I would rather pull the turbo and inspect all my work than pull the transmission and do a rear main and still have an oil leak. So yesterday I pulled the turbo while my daughter was playing at the neighbors and the Warden was out with the other child. Today I removed one up pipe connection and was able to slide the adapter plate out. I was hoping to find a nicked oring or something. Everything looked good with exception to the amount if oil that was under the plate. Everything is coated evenly. All I can think of is that the orings were making a good seal when new and then once they had sat for a bit they no longer held a seal. Both orings were very flat upon removal and I doubt they would have held very my pressure.

So what now? Where do I need to go to get an oring that will actually seal the pressure side of the turbo oil feed. I don't think I can use these brown ones as I seem to recall a similar problem back in 09 or so.

Get the OEM O rings. I've used plenty of the Viton O rings from HF and haven't had one leak, and these are uses in hydraulic systems in heavy machinery.

Edit: Adam thanks for reading my ramble !!!

I believe these are OEM from Riff Raff. The were very flat when removed and haven't reshaped after being removed.

I will go through my oring kit and see what I have.

Maybe I will look through a different kit. As I believe the duramoter rating of the stock orings is 90..

The OEM O rings are yellow in color, and normally the ones I've taken out usually are flat and stay that way.

This is my selection on a Sunday morning. The brown ones are what I took out. The two in front of the pencil were bagged together in an unmarked bag. (Probably the ones I will use.)

They look to be your best shot based on what you have to work with

I have found all the orings. I have a set of new brown ones as well.

I took the turbo apart because it had oil on it and made sure the split ring was at 12 o'clock and am ready to go back in. If I had a Cummins oil drain I would chuck that in as well.

The turbo was missing the large oring. Now it has silicon.

Well gentlemen.

All back together. And the turbo shaft has play up and down. I took the housing off while the sealant was wet and set the parts on the bench. Not sure what happened but it did not work out as planned.

Soooooo.

A bit of up and down play is okay?! In and out is bad. The wheel didn't touch the housing. Maybe I will stick it back together this evening and run it tomorrow.

Up and down that yields blade not touching is ok.
in and out is no bueno.
Once oil flows in it floats the shaft and gets tight.
No worries sir.
Hope this fixes the oil leak. Not much worse than that after a big repair.

Thanks Aaron,

Its about to get taken apart again.

I am on the hunt for a Cummins turbo drain, or I will put a braided hose in to get the adapter down tight.

Mother in law just blew in. Gotta go clean the broom closet.
