transmission clunking

transmission clunking
On my 97 psd 5 speed, whenever i push in the clutch to shift, it clunks. Is this normal? and it kind of sounds like at idle there is a banging noise coming from either the transmission or the transfer case. I knew when i bought this truck i might have to do some transmission work, so what could be wrong? would rebuilding the tranny fix my problems, and how much could it cost?
