I just picked up my 2001 F250 SC V-10 manual transmission and everything is great except for some clunking noises coming from the transmission. Everytime I push in the clutch or let the clutch out I hear a loud clunking noise. Does anyone else have this problem or is this just a normal thing.
2000 SD SC V10 4x4 3.73, with the loudest 5spd I have ever driven. It made more noise brand new than my 69' Highboy 4x4 4spd did at a gazillion miles. Two different Ford dealers told me to live with it, cause it's just "gearslap". I thought for sure it was to much backlash in the rear diff, but it wasn't. It is coming out of the clutch/tranny area. I read a post some time back about a guy who got it fixed, so you might check previous posts. I have 25k on the truck now and it is still there. The truck goes like hell, but sounds like it too. Do you have a high idle problem when you let the clutch out and the truck takes off at a about 950 rpm's. I have a terrible time backing a trailer cause it goes so fast and I don't want to slip the clutch to slow it down. I end up putting the transfer case in 4lo to brake it down. Ford says all is normal there too and the base idle is right where it should be. I am getting rid of it and getting a 01' F350 4x4 with an auto and 4.30's. I figure the lower gears will help pulling with the auto, cause that 5spd sure does have more grunt than the auto. Hope this helps?!?
It is true, that the driveline's on the SD's are a tiny bit more noisy than other trucks..
You'll notice over time that you'll get used to shifting smoother, and the shifting will become a little less notchy.. I'm planning to switch to synthetic tranny oil at 25k which I've heard smooths the shifting even more..
1st to 2nd gear: a. I hardly ever even use 1st gear as its a superlow thats really only meant to be used when pulling/hauling heavy loads.
This shift is usually a little 'notchy' for me, and sometimes will clunk..
2nd to 3rd: sometimes the shift is a little notchy, but it doesn't clunk unless I've over-reved or under reved it or just plain screw up the shift..
3rd to 4th: fairly smooth, no clunk
4th to 5th: smooth again, no clunk..
No doubt, this tranny is nothing like that of my old Ford Ranger or Ford Probe, but those tranny/clutches didn't have half the capacity of the SuperDuty..
Hi, i have the exact same problem as you. There is a loud clunk in the transmission when you accelerate hard and then let off the gas or release the clutch while its under load. Its almost like there is gear lash in the transmission itself. I jacked up one of the rear wheels and turned the tire while it was in gear and the loud clanking happened. Ive narrowed it down to the transmission first i thought it was a bad u joint but i crawled under the truck while someone else was turning the wheel and the clanking came directly from the transmission. Ive checked alot of stuff that could cause this but the sound is coming from inside the transmission so theres not much i can do without tearing it apart (which i want to avoid). Also i go offroading alot and it makes it difficult when im in low 4x4 and the gear lash is so bad i can feel the truck moving back and forth when i make a sudden stop. Something isnt right here and im getting worried about what it might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
hmm..im not sure if there was a known problem or not but your right, that much lash just doesnt seem right. I plan on changing all drivetrain fluids in the future but untill then i dont know what to do..
